"The Boo Jays - Happy Halloween 7""

Naveed of The Boo Jays hooked us up with their debut 7" coming June 24th on Astrodorque Records. Monster Mash-influenced psych. Baritone vocals. Heavy bass grooves. Very fucking cool. Better appreciated when listening through headphones. I'll be bumpin' this shit hard when I'm drinking my Fighting Cock on the rocks this weekend. Four tracks on glow-in-the-dark vinyl. A must have. Keep an eye out. - ONGAKUBAKA

"Today's Hotness: Tre Orsi, The Boo Jays"

In addition to being a holiday and a time of year, Halloween is also a state of mind. We know this because Mrs. Clicky Clicky is all about Halloween no matter what the calendar says. She would seem to have a kindred spirit in Naveed Mir, the sole proprietor of the Portland, Ore.-based spooky surf-psych band The Boo Jays. Mr. Mir's own Astrodorque Records will issue June 24 The Boo Jays' four-song single Happy Halloween on cassette and 7" glow in the dark vinyl. It's a little B-52s, a little Bauhaus, and more than a little awesome. Reverbed, bending guitar chords, eerie vintage synth and quietly growled vocals are the pleasantly recognizable psych signifiers for "Creepy Crawlin'." But the song we like best is "We Drank Your Blood With The Owls," which leads off side B of the planned release. The uptempo track rides breakneck drumming while Mir offers some of his hookier vocal and organ melodies. All the while a lead guitar line ripples under the weight of something like overdriven Small Stone under a canopy of crash cymbal. It's a hot track. Mir has graciously consented to let us give the track away here. Check it out, and if you dig it, order the vinyl here. - Clicky Clicky Music Blog

"The Boo Jays - Happy Halloween"

The trio from Portland unleashes on unsuspecting listeners a mix of surf, punk, post punk and psychedelia drowned in distortion. Within the four tracks of this EP, The Boo Jays have time to combine the Birthday Party and B 52 ‘s in Spider Party, to record the soundtrack for a porn film shot in a haunted house in the surf molested Creepy Crawlin’, and show that through the noise they can make obscure tunes beautiful like the tracks Mauthaus (the wonderful vocals and organ) and We Drunk Your Blood With The Owls. Add to these vocals that sound like going through the cave (something like Beat Happening or God Bullies) and you have the perfect birthday gift for a psychopath friend or appropriate-sounding to scare your neighbors. I definitely want to hear more soon from these guys! - Stereoworld.gr

"The Boo Jays - Happy Halloween"

A bastard child of B-52’s, surf and psychedelic rock (and, according to press release, Nirvana – although I can hardly hear their influence on this record), Boo Jays are a Portland, OR quintet that sound like they got hold of time machine (or, alternatively, got stuck in the 60s). It's quite a fun and refreshing little record. Oh, and check out the video for “Creepy Crawlin’” since its very well done. - I Heart Noise
