Ah, The Boy Who (not to be confused with The Boy Least Likely To). I just found out about these guys two hours ago, but it feels like I've been a fan for a while. Maybe it's because I've grown up in Kentucky, but I'm feeling a real connection to their music. There's banjos, layers of guitars and some twangy vocals. The Boy Who is suggested for fans of Clem Snide, Wilco, Brendan Benson and and rockers than aren't afraid to get a little folksy from time to time.
My favorite song of the bunch comes from a new batch of demos, only one of which has been released to the public. Marvelous and Magnificent is every bit as good as the title would lead you to believe. It's a fun little ride and hopefully is a good indicator as to the quality of the new demos...I'm rather excited. Hey is also worth mentioning for the exceptional lyrics in the verses. While the chorus is rather lacking in impact, the verses have some of the coolest lines east of the Mississippi. While he might not be Jeff Tweedy, Rick Carver surely has a long and wonderful career ahead of him.

Born in Delaware, living in Boston, staying in Maryland: three spheres of influence that have impacted the music of The Boy Who. This man of mystery has a way with words defined by a take on life far beyond the usual scope of things. Influences to the music vary from the obvious and famed (The Beatles, Beck, Brian Wilson, Badly Drawn Boy, Neil Young) to the unexpected and overlooked (The Cardigans, Doug Martsch, Gentle Giant, Queen, The Polyphonic Spree). Due to this wide variety, the end result is something totally different and absolutely delectible to the ears. and eyes.
What sets The Boy Who out from the crowd is this: both the recordings and the live show experiences are equally unique and powerful. Recordings often show the strength of Rick Carver's solo abilities, playing all the instruments and engineering himself, with only occasional assistance from fellow musicians. However, the live show brings together five equally-skilled musicians putting 200% effort into their performance. A typical show demonstrates Rick Carver's ability as a frontperson, but also shows true comradery and chemistry amongst the entire band. Songs take a new feel with the full band - often becoming more lively and vibrant. However, this does not mean that the original instruments of the recordings are compromised; the band brings along synths, an accordion, folk instruments, and even bagpipes. Vocal harmonies that will guarantee chills, impecable sound, and choreographed dance moves highlight the performance. A backdrop of projected visual displays provided by soundman and graphic designer Kenn Koubek set the perfect backdrop to the set. The Boy Who is an experience unlike any other, and will always leave you floored.
