Band number two was The Brett Cohen Band. I ran into a friend of Brett’s earlier in the evening who told me that Brett was a fantastic player that someday would be famous. After sitting through his 30 minute set I will have to agree with the gentleman. He peeled what little paint is left off the Coach House walls. What this guy is doing playing at J. Carters Tavern & Grill in Murrieta is beyond me. Someone needs to take him out of the tavern and get him on tour. Apparently he does have a following as I saw several folks wearing T shirts that say “I Know Brett Cohen” roaming around the Coach House. I hope that Gary invites him back sometime soon. THE BRETT COHEN BAND is a jam band from Southern California that plays what they call “California Blues”; a potent mixture of the Chicago Blues style of acts like Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, and Howlin’ Wolf, the Funk of groups like Parliament, James Brown, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Classic Rock of acts like Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and ZZ Top. “Every geographical region has its own distinctive style of blues,” says band leader Brett Cohen (guitar, vocals), “California is a cultural and musical melting pot with no one distinctive style, but rather a hybrid of many things. Our music is representative of that blend. It’s not straight ahead blues, or rock, or funk; it’s all of them. The blues is our canvas, but we use rock and funk grooves to paint our pictures and tell our stories.”
THE BRETT COHEN BAND plays both originals and covers that they’ve reworked to match their style. With this blend they are able to entertain blues purists, jam band lovers, and audiences looking to dance alike. Their live shows are both highly entertaining and interactive with the band tailoring each show to fit their audience.
The band consists of Brett Cohen, Mike Emory (bass, Vocals), Garrett Morris (drums), Ron Harmon (Keys), and Ryan Berkowsky (Harmonica). Their debut album, BIG LOVE, was released independently on May 8, 2012, and was soon after picked up by MUSIK AND FILM (UMG). Their single "I Just Want to Get You Home" has been picked up by over 300 radio stations world wide.
