Bio

In ’97 Cliff Barns and D.G hooked up as two individual rappers but on the same path. With Cliff Barns writing and producing he’s own tracks at a home studio in Pretoria the two mc’s got together and started writing music. Two years later in ‘99, The Brokekings were born. A rap group fueled on love/hate, current affairs and the political state of their country but at the same time animating the “normal” things in life with cleverly sewn together lyrics, laced on ELITE BEATS make for an original and innovative form of message. Since then they have taken their rhyme styles and experimented with different sounds trying to tap in to the industry. After the second disc they produced, The Brokekings got asked to perform at the “BATTLE of the YEAR” held in Cape Town. After a while The Brokekings left for the UK to pursue their music career with the hopes of actually creating one. In the UK, ended up in battles with well known UK group Blak Twang, holding their own representing with their South African BK style. Continuously producing track after track The Brokekings had definitely found their sound and just needed a break. Years on, the stress of it all caused D.G and Cliff Barns to go their separate ways. D.G stayed in the UK taking part in Battle rap contests taking out numerous mc’s of high caliber, and Cliff Barns back in South Africa got asked to bring his raps and join a group called The Flash Republic – worked with them on an album that got nominated for a SAMA award. Staying in contact, the two mc’s have now made their latest disc called “AIR IN THE NIGHT” – which is a compilation that was done across continents. Cliff Barns in NZ and D.G in the UK – not a single moment shared in the same studio so surprisingly have managed to pull off a “Led Zeplin smashing their guitars over Dr Dre’s mpc player while Bob Marley’s laughing in the backround” listening experience.
