"Band Defined by Unique Style of Music"

eatery Friday night in Zachary, Dec. 10, I had the chance to interview Cullen Davezac, 22, and his band mates, Carson Ducote, 21, and Randall Head, 22.

I discovered that the trio of collegiates, Davezac attends LSU, Ducote and Head are at Southeastern, do not like pigeon-holing themselves into any specific genre of music.

When I asked what type of music the band plays, I was told: "You'll just have to wait and see and then judge for yourself," Davezac laughingly replied.

"We get asked that question all the time, and we can never give a definite answer!" Head said smilingly.

I decided to change my tactic and got them talking about their influences.

Davezac cited the Dave Matthews Band, Merle Haggard and Ray Charles as his favorites; Head said the Red Hot Chili Peppers; and Ducote lists Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Stones among his influences.

In fact, the trio pulls from various styles of music such as rock, reggae, soul, jazz, blues, funk, cultural and fusion.

This young, super friendly and super talented band call themselves The Broken Rubber Band. However, I soon discovered their sound is anything but broken, in fact it is super connected and super original. Their unique sound has something for everyone.

The guys played a couple of cover songs, with their own spin, of course, but mostly played original songs with lots of soulful enthusiasm, rich lyrics and great guitar riffs. The crowd was soon snappin', clappin' and stompin' their feet.

It didn't matter that I didn't know the words to the songs, because the band's music is so catchy, so on fire, that by the end of each song I was wishing I knew the words so I could sing along.

Davezac's unexpected rock and soul-filled voice reels you in while his bandmates keep you hooked with their awesome guitar sounds.

The fact that these guys are young means zilch when compared to their music, since the Broken Rubberband's lyrics and melodies belie their age. It's as though each song tells a story of a long life's rich experiences.

The guys are the founding members of BROOM (Baton Rouge Organization of Original Musicians) and have a Facebook page where they invite you to become a fan...I know I'm now one!

Next show: Thursday, Dec. 23, at Boudreaux and Thibodeaux's in Baton Rouge.

Bio

The Broken Rubber Band formed in early 2010, by Cullen Davezac and Carson Ducote. The duo began writing and performing their original music, and knew they had something great to offer. They picked up lead guitarist Randall Head in July 2010, and started playing shows around Baton Rouge. The band went through 3 drummers in the second half of 2010, but have finally found stability with the addition of drummer Chad Byrd.
What started as a simple formula of guitars, drums and vocals has been enriched with additions of piano, violin, cello, and trumpet, taking the band's sound to new levels. The Broken Rubber Band combines influences from jazz, blues, and even reggae and hard rock to form a refreshing, original sound.

The band members' most notable influences include The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Dave Matthews Band, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Merle Haggard.

The band has played at many venues around Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, including Northgate Tavern, Fred's in Tigerland, The Howlin' Wolf, the Varsity Theatre, and more.

The band has recorded with various local producers, and even on their own, and is looking to record an EP by the summer.

The Broken Rubber Band founded the Baton Rouge Organization of Original Musicians, which is an organization which focuses on promoting and networking original local musicians in Baton Rouge. BROOM has put on large scale events at Fred's in Tigerland and the Varsity Theatre.
