Bio

The Broken Stares are a product of a time and place, and a unique history that lead them on four different paths to the same musical meeting point. Bennett Sullivan grew up in North Carolina and honed his banjo and guitar skills with masters of traditional Appalachian music and bluegrass. He's now a top-call musician in New York and has worked with a who's who of the bluegrass scene. Chris Miller moved to New York to pursue jazz saxophone, but was immediately drawn in to the teeming folk and americana scene in the city. His highly sought after sax playing has been featured on records by AC Newman, Doug Wamble, Mike & Ruthy, the Revelers, and more. Identical twins Adam and David Moss grew up playing music together, but have spent the last several years on diverging paths. Both grew up studying classical music (Violin/Viola and Cello respectively) Adam moved to Boston and delved deep into bluegrass and klezmer music, while David went south to Austin and immersed himself in songwriting and rock with his band the Blue Hit. Both brothers found themselves in New York after playing in Anais Mitchell's renowned Hadestown orchestra.

Together, the band moves seamlessly from a classical string quartet to a jazz exploration, a heart-wrenching ballad into a burning bluegrass tune, without the listener ever being aware of a disturbance. Though drawing from a multitude of styles, one thing ties it all together - musicality. With each new idea being tested against a strict standard: "Does it sound good?" Sounds simple enough, but the end result is a rare one - succinct memorable and beautiful songs and instrumentals.
