Bio

After years of playing in blues and soul cover bands, Joe and I were ready for a new adventure. We wanted to play music that grabbed people and moved them. When I saw Walter “Wolfman” Washington tearing up the stage at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco, I found IT. This music was funky, bluesy and joyous! With Joe, on drums, and me on guitar and vocals, we enlisted various partners in crime to join us on this journey to find the fOnk. After a couple years working on our sound in clubs and cafes throughout the SF Bay area and a couple sojourns to New Orleans, THE BROTHERS GOLDMAN was born.

For musical inspiration we went to the source, the originators of New Orleans Funk - The Meters. We mixed that up with some ‘70’s Acid Jazz influences and topped it off with a nod to contemporary Avant-Groove pioneers Medeski, Martin and Wood, creating our unique musical gumbo TANTRIC FONK! Our mantra “Make it feel good and last a long time!”

Since forming in 2003 we’ve played The Great American Music Hall, The Fillmore Auditorium, Yoshi’s and numerous taverns, cafes and restaurants with an ever evolving cast of collaborators. We have made our home on the same stage where we first found inspiration – San Francisco’s own Boom Boom Room.

Our first CD “fOnk” was recorded live at the Boom Boom Room in 2008 and received local airplay on KRSH 95.9FM and KPOO 89.5FM. Our latest release, 2011’s “fOnkOlOgy” expands on our ever evolving search for the fOnk, with special guests Wil Blades on B-3, Joe Cohen on saxophone, Will “Billy Magic” Magid on trumpet and Erik Frykman on guitar.
