Band Rock Blues

Still working on that hot first release.

3 professionals from different walks of life that work for a living and write / play music for fun. The Buzz Contenders started when Brett sent a blind email to the bass player, Bob, through a musician website. To Brett's surprise Bob responded (the previous 10 guys didn't) and they got together for a few writing sessions to see what the result would be. They clicked, the music clicked, and the The Buzz Contenders were born.

The music they write and play today is mostly rooted in blues but has a distinct upbeat syncopated groove; the band calls the style progressive blues. You will not find another artist that sounds like The Buzz Contenders (or vice versa) and sometimes its even hard to find The Buzz Contenders because of their busy lives. When you do find them you will be entertained by a 3-piece band with good vocals, interesting licks, and a burning desire to entertain the crowd.

Brett Mullinix:
Started life as an accomplished drummer (no he wasn't born with sticks in his hands). Brett decided to pick up guitar in an attempt to communicate as a drummer to the guitar players in the various bands he was in. What he didn't realize is that he would get great satisfaction from playing guitar and the song writing ability the guitar affords. Today Brett no longer plays drums, not with the Buzz anyways, but he does focus on playing guitar and singing. Brett does the majority of composing and writes all the lyrics. Brett thoroughly enjoys old blues by the likes of Pinetop Perkins, Tom Waits, and Robert Johnson.

Bob O'Hara:
Originally played alto and tenor saxophone in high school, loved the instrument but life got in the way and Bob stopped playing once he got to college. Years later Bob bought a cheap bass after hearing a friend play. He loved the sound but found it was a distinct departure from playing the sax. Bob tinkered with the bass for years the finally decided to take lessons from a professionally trained instructor. Bob still had a burning desire to play the saxophone so in the last few months he has purchased a sax and has integrated several sax solos into the set list. Bob loves listening to the playing styles of bassists such as Flea, Oteil Burbridge, Geddy Lee, Adam Nitti, and Victor Wooten; and bands such as Oingo Boingo, Incubus, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Rick Nelligan:
Originally from the ever-evolving musical melting pot of Washington DC, Rick begged his parents for a drum kit after seeing his neighbor play. He formed his first band, named Baccardi (yes, the Rum but with two cs), in the 6th grade with friends. He adapted his style after several great drummers, such as Bonham, Rudd, and Peart. Moving to Atlanta in 2001, Rick continued honing his drumming skills with local bands Ransom, The Accused, and others, playing throughout the Southeast. When The Buzz went looking for a new drummer, Rick was all over it. Seeing him behind the drum kit playing an original like It Doesnt Matter, or a ZZ Top cover like Just Got paid, youll see why he loves every second of it - and you will too.
