Bio

The Bygones are a Vancouver, BC band that is essentially a tribute band.  But to a music genre instead of a single artist.  The genre is Power Pop: Power chords mixed with sumptuous melodies and stellar harmonies.  Its roots are steeped in The Beatles and other British Invasion groups such as The Kinks and The Who.  From The Who's Can't Explain, the lineage continues through Badfinger, Big Star, The Raspberries, Todd Rundgren and Cheap Trick in the '70s, later with The Gin Blossoms, Odds, and hundreds more.

Many bands still carry on the Power Pop tradition, writing and recording new material to add to its fascinating legacy.  Instead of writing new songs, The Bygones cover some of the gems of the genre. Like Tony Bennett covers jazz classics -- because he loves them.

The Bygones repertoire focuses on songs and artists regrettably overlooked outside of Power Pop devotees. Their song list includes offerings by Big Star, Dwight Twilley, Badfinger, The Wackers, The Smithereens, The Records, Matthew Sweet and more.

Fans of the genre react to these songs not only as nostalgia, but with a passionate connection and devotion.  For those who are less familiar, The Bygones might appear to be a band playing original material.

Their goal is to present an overview of a style of music that features easily likable melodies and can elicit inescapable visceral reactions.

What's wrong with that?

The Bygones consist of drummer, vocalist Wayne Cullen, bassist and back up vocalist James North, guitarist Rich Hawkes, and guitarist Jeff Cullen

  • Wayne is a former Montrealer, who played in 70s bands alongside one of the progenitors of Power Pop -- Bob Segarini -- including The Wackers and its offshoot, The Dudes. He's played in countless cover and original bands since then. Wayne's love of this genre of music has not wavered over the decades.
  • James North has been playing drums or bass since 2007. He has played in various rock and punk bands such as The Last Call, The Malingerers, Rochambeau. Livewire, and a Clash tribute -- The Westway. Venues where he has appeared include the ANZA Club, the Backstage Lounge, the Princeton Pub and Iron Road. Musical influences include the Flamin' Groovies, the Clash, the Pixies, and DEVO.
  • Rich grew up listening to Cream, Pink Floyd and The Who and took up guitar in his teens. He played in garage bands in Toronto before moving west and settling in Vancouver where he played in punk bands The Malingerers and The Westway with James North. He's loves power pop, post-punk, progressive rock and everything in between. Influences include Pete Townshend, Paul Weller of The Jam, Richard Lloyd with Television, Matthew Sweet, and the late John McGeoch of Magazine, Siouxsie and the Banshees and PiL.
  • Jeff is Wayne's son. He developed a hankering for Power Pop from being exposed to Pop's Pop at home. He has played guitar and bass for over 10 years, including a stint with a punk-surf band -- Mexican Drug Patrol. Influences include XTC, Squeeze, Midnight Oil, Steely Dan and funk.
