"FFWD - Calgary Music - Record Reviews - The Cable-knits - Twins"

Twins is the brash and playful debut from the Cable-knits, a.k.a. the Calgary duo of Nate Waters (of Hunter-Gatherer) and LeeJay Dunphy (ditto Stalwart Sons). This duo wraps spiky post-punk guitar progressions overtop of loops smeared like children’s fingerpaint; with stomping drums and vibrant, elastic vocals, it’s like a pair of kids (albeit kids with deep voices) decided to combine the Beach Boys, Beat Happening and Sonic Youth — and guess what? It totally works!

Much of Twins maintains a sense of playful immediacy that never takes itself too seriously, but these songs could hardly be considered flippant. “Eyelash Got You Down” and “Worry Tree” demonstrate impressive poise between stomping rock naiveté and erudite pop songcraft, but nearly all of these brief songs are filled to the brim with hooks and ideas, both textural and melodic. The overall tone changes a bit at the end, with “No Good Place” slowing everything down into a goopy molasses before gradually morphing into a torrential whirlwind of noise in “Homebody,” but the more I listen, the more it all works.

Overall, Twins is a very promising debut; if you can listen past the thin and somewhat shrill production, you’ll find twee-tantrum gold — and lovingly wrapped in twine, no less! - FFWD Weekly

"Quick Hitters:: The Cable-knits"

It’s with a hint of sadness I bring you the frantic stylings of The Cable-knits. Technically, the Calgary duo – LeeJay Dunphy and Nate Waters – write pop songs; the infectious guitar melodies and harmonies are often hidden or obfuscated by fragmented blasts of noise and droning waves of sound, but they are the building blocks of almost every song the duo writes.

All things considered, it’s not shocking that my first reaction was that the duo sounded a bit like Women. Obviously, with the news of Chris Reimer’s passing, these songs now trigger more sadness than they did only hours ago, but hopefully that doesn’t lessen the appeal of the end product for most people.

Twins, a ten-song cassette release, is full of blissful moments of pop, garage riff-age and layers and ear pleasing noise. Unlike the pop nuggets Women constructed, Twins is more free flowing and open. Opting to ignore meticulous arrangements, The Cable-knits are more comfortable exploring new terrain without a map, and it gives the songs a nice spontaneous feel.

Over the last few years, lo-fi pop jams have made a comeback of which LL could be proud and that often leads to sub par results from bands trying to swim in the wake of creativity. The Cable-knits put their own stamp on this tried and true sound, and Twins should appeal to any fan of lo-fi noise. It’s pretty hard to listen to this tape today, but in time these songs are going to be ones I revisit frequently. Grab em now, for free. - HeroHill.com

"New Canadiana :: The Cable-Knits – Twins"

Calgary’s Cable-knits play summery skate jams for when you got dumped by your brace-faced teenage girlfriend and just want to bust a boneless into the pool. Knotty threads of guitar drive the duo’s junk-fi pop into a swift set of sugar rush head-boppers. Turns out Stalwart Sons plus Hunter Gatherer equals hook city. - Weird Canada

"The Cable-knits – Twins"

Calgary’s Cable-knits explode from earbuds like a lo-fi avalanche of quasi-surf, quasi-punk, quasi-garage, and a lot of other strains of modern rock and roll that have been arranged and rearranged with aplomb in recent years. What makes Twins stand out to me is its attitude. Unlike many of their sonic contemporaries who seem to thrive in a fog of existential hipster angst, the Cable-knits strike a decidedly more upbeat and exuberant chord, even if I can’t tell exactly what the subject matter of the lyrics are through all the fuzz. What I can hear–very clearly indeed–is that these songs put a skip in one’s step, a tap in one’s toes, and a ringing in one’s ears. If Animal Collective were forced to abandon their electronics–god forbid–and simply play rock music, and to tone down the quirky vocal noises a bit, it may not sound entirely different from this EP of what I’m tempted to call sunshine-grunge or some equally silly label. Call it what you will, it’s a great way to spend 20 minutes. - ArgueJob.com
