Bio

The CALGARY BLUESHOUNDS In 2000 a Yellow Hound with a “Starr” on her forehead was born. Her spellbinding lonesome howl was heard in the valleys, across the prairire far and wide .. loud and clear .. especially on moon-filled nights. Little did those called by her know what the future held !

Authentic sound you say ? Well now ...there's the The Calgary BluesHounds …
Bluesm'n Don hailing from Longview Alberta is a tribute with his deep “gravelly” voice to greats such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Water. Bassist, composer Willie Dixon composed and wrote one of Colin The Hounds favourite songs “Hoochie Coochie Man”. Here I must let you know that both Colin The Hound and his son were born and raised in South Africa, immigrating to Canada in 1997 diving full on into the Blues. FastHound Tym (whose style and sound have been likened to Buddy Guy and ZZ Top) tells me that both he, Bluesm'n and The Hound agree “the music comes from their heads … a delivery or a birth happens ! There is never really a specific thought injected to enable a song to be written … it plays in the mind and spills out onto the fretboard or the harp.” Bluesm'n Don declares, “Whatever the mood, it goes into pure expression, the challenges of life are put out as the music … The Blues !”

The Calgary BluesHounds Forefathers, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Jimmy Reed were all born in Mississippi and moved to Chicago. The Hounds' and their Forefathers' style is characterized by the use of electric guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, and a rhythm section of bass and drums. JT Brown who played in Elmore James's and JB Lenoir's bands also used saxophones like the Hounds, but these were used more as "backing" or rhythmic support than as solo instruments. The BluesHounds have transitioned this instrument, using it for a number of solos thereby allowing the instrument and Musician Sax Machine Gene, the Pied Piper of the group [intrinsifying all who hear him] to enhance and compliment the sound and style of the Band. Timbrewolf, born and raised in Calgary [having had the opportunity to open for a Rock Revival Show], limbers into the enclosure, showing us music is his pulse ! Canis Lupis “Agwang Apio” [first wolf born of twins], the funky Irish extraction of the group played with Malchix' (a rock band with a violin section), 'Bamboo' (formerly Dalek I Love You and latterly 'Sex Tribe') and brings about diversity.

These Big Hearted Calgary BluesHounds are dedicated to helping out in their community and are also dedicated to assisting young musicians grow in musical and performance skills and imparting The Blues !

Says Boss Des .. “Since 2008 the Calgary BluesHounds have played at close to 50 gigs and enjoyed every one of them. They are continuously on the look out for more music pleasure.”
