The Calm porte bien son nom

DELSON - C'est en chantant en auto avec Rachel Diabo, à la sortie d'une boîte de nuit, que Maxime Comeau a eu le déclic pour fonder The Calm, en 2001.

Le chanteur et musicien de Candiac avait déjà mesuré sa voix à d'autres filles, mais aucune ne s'harmonisait aussi bien avec son organe vocal. "J'avais trouvé celle que je cherchais", se souvient celui qui vient de lancer son premier album intitulé Are you on my side?.

Quelques temps plus tard, le duo chantait dans les bars et se présentait comme Max et Rachel. L'aventure a duré deux ans avant que les partenaires tentent d'enregistrer un album. Après deux tentatives auprès de producteurs différents, le duo n'avait toujours pas trouvé le son qu'il souhaitait projeter.

De leur mésaventure a alors émergé le nom du groupe. "On était un peu en dépression après le deuxième producteur. C'est là que Rachel a dit qu'on devrait retrouver la paix intérieure ou the calm", relate l'homme de 26 ans.

Peu après, Matthew LeGroulx et Yves Dumontier se sont joints au groupe. "La chimie était là!", lance celui qui avait trouvé l'équation parfaite.

Dichotomie de styles
The Calm est un quatuor composé de Maxime Comeau, au chant et à la guitare acoustique, Rachel Diabo, au chant, Matthew LeGroulx, à la guitare basse, et Yves Dumontier, à la batterie.

Leur répertoire musical est large. Leur style s'apparente à Fleetwood Mac avec des airs de pop-rock. Plusieurs pistes softs s'écoutent bien en roulant tranquillement en voiture, ce qui fait dire que le groupe The Calm porte bien son nom. Alors qu'une chanson est de type western, d'autres, plus énergiques comme Boy friend, sonnent plus rock.

"Les chansons d'amour, de pertes, d'insécurité, de démons intérieurs sont leur spécialité. En fait, le style de Max et Rachel a souvent été comparé aux chansons des auteurs-compositeurs-interprètes des années 1970", indique-t-on sur le site Internet de la formation.

"On a un côté fort très loud et un autre plus doux. On a un côté Beau Dommage et un autre plus Led Zeppelin", ajoute M. Comeau.

Cette dichotomie se perçoit également parmi les admirateurs du groupe. "Il y a des adolescentes de 14-15 ans qui viennent nous voir et veulent savoir si Rachel et moi on sort ensemble. C'est vrai qu'on a une chimie très intense et qu'on est extrêmement proches, note-t-il tout en avisant du même souffle que la chanteuse, mère de trois enfants, a un copain depuis plusieurs années. De l'autre côté, il y a des gens début quarantaine qui nous aiment, car notre musique ressemble aux bands qu'ils écoutaient dans les années 1970."

Source d'inspiration
Maxime Comeau a écrit la majorité des chansons du disque. Il affirme sans ambages qu'il s'inspire des Rufus Wainwright, Franz Ferdinand ou The cure de ce monde. "Ma drogue, c'est la musique", lance-t-il.

Fils d'une mère anglophone, il compose ses textes en anglais souvent à partir d'anecdotes personnelles. Par exemple, sa difficulté à conserver un travail de bureau avec un horaire de 9 h à 5 h est à l'origine de la chanson au titre ironique Ode to a yes-man. "C'est difficile d'être quelqu'un dans ce monde de yes-men (personne qui dit toujours oui à son supérieur)", débute ainsi la piste.

Celui qui a une formation de réalisateur pour le cinéma met présentement ce métier en veilleuse. "Mais, ce n'est pas perdu. Si on a à faire un vidéoclip avec Boyfriend, je vais être le premier à me proposer. J'ai déjà produit un film de 90 minutes alors, je suis capable d'en faire un de 2 min 58 s", compare-t-il.

The Calm prépare une tournée à travers le Québec et les provinces maritimes. "On est dans une bonne période. On est très optimistes", indique celui qui a vendu plus de 500 exemplaires du disque Are you on my side? alors qu'il était uniquement offert sur Internet.

The Calm sera en spectacle au Café Shäika situé au 5526, Sherbrooke ouest, à Montréal, le 5 mai, à 20 h 30. La représentation est gratuite. Le groupe sera de passage au Double Deuce à La Prairie, le lendemain, à 20 h. L'entrée coûte 5 $. L'album est disponible chez Disques Delson et sur le site Web du quatuor au www.thecalmband.com. n

Wow! A wah-wah pedal! I haven't heard that in a while. Nice touch. The stinging slide guitar really fits with this song. It's great how this song builds up to the hook, which is quite catchy. The guitars and vocals and the rhythm, in fact the whole thing reminds me of very early Stones - which are some of my favorite albums. This is a great song and a great scream in the middle of the song as well. You don't hear that much anymore. I love it. I listened to it twice! - Garage Band.com

great intro. a funny slant .. and worked well. The uptempo beat keeps your toe tappin and keeps the 'feel good' feeling.
Banjo sounds well played and placed perfectly in the mix .. just adding the right notes at the right times.
Vocals are top notch. filled with emotion and well delivered.
Harmonies are also right on ..

The Calm put on an album release show this past Tuesday, at Café Campus in Montreal. The album is called « Are you on my side? » The Calm are Max Comeau, Rachel Diabo, Matt Legroulx and Yves Dumontier, and there were just over 200 people on their side, and every one of them was rewarded for the effort of venturing out on a Tuesday night.

More often than not, an album launch will consist mostly of songs that the majority of the general public is not familiar with, but because they are fans of the artist, they are willing and eager to listen, and everything’s honky-dory.

This one was slightly different from the usual album launch routine in that it was early in the week and early in the evening. It started on time and ended early. It was also different from the performance aspect.

The intimacy of the venue was an ideal setting for the way The Calm played. They were having fun. Several guests were brought up during the show, including K103’s Lance Delisle on harmonica and Rob Lutes on the dobro.

The spotlight was very liberally shared as was the credit and thanks from the band for the album and the show. There was a complete lack of ego in the entire night. It was a refreshing change from the norm.

Overall, The Calm has a pop/folk sound, but you can’t really pin them down into one category or genre. The list of musical influences on their my-space page includes, among others, The Cure, Neil Young, Kiss and Fleetwood Mac (although it doesn’t say if it’s earlier or later Fleetwood Mac. In one way, it makes a big difference, but in the context of this list, it could easily include both).

Adding my two cents to that list (or to the confusion), one of the last songs The Calm played was Lou Reed’s “Waiting for the Man”. If the Velvet Underground went through a Beach Boys phase, this is what they would have sounded like. It works the other way around too, if the Beach Boys went through a Velvet Underground phase (and with the sometimes bizarre stuff we’ve heard about Brian Wilson, that’s probably the more realistic scenario of the two).

But drop all of the seriousness of those personalities and the song’s subject matter, and put it in the capable hands of performers who are just playing for the joy of playing music, that’ll give you a pretty good indication of how the whole night went. You couldn’t help but be on their side.
