"First Listen: The CarLeans “Irene”"

There is a hurt in the tone and emotion of the tune “Irene” by The CarLeans. Jim Carpenter has a John Prine or late-in-life Johnny Cash whisper and cut to his voice. Soft and hushed in a way but still gruff and meaningful in its delivery. It begs you to pay attention and lean in close to listen at the softer parts of the song.

"she was late, in the early Spring
it was fate, she lied, now she wears your ring
those church bells rang like a siren
she was showin by then and you were gone, Irene"

The tune builds nicely, while remaining bare. Sarah MacLean’s tender harmony vocal blends beautifully with Carpenter’s rasp and the string arrangements dance delicately around the story of the song.

Check out this single from The CarLeans today and check in on the band’s site for the official release of the full record “Drowing Moon”. The CD Release party will be happening on February 13 at the Eugene O’Neill Rose Barn in Waterford, CT. - Red Line Roots

"CarLeans, Jim Carpenter celebrate new albums at O’Neill Theater Center"

Jim Carpenter could have a fine career as a juggler.
How else to explain the singer/songwriter/producer's dexterity as he effortlessly manages to excel in so many musical capacities?

Consider Saturday's "Cabin Fever" concert in the Rose Barn Theater at Waterford's Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. The CarLeans headline the festivities with a release party for their new and delectable "Drowning Moon" CD. The band features vocalist/guitarist Sarah MacLean and bassist Corina Malbaurn as well as Carpenter — and he co-wrote the material with MacLean and also produced the record.
After the CarLeans perform their album, The Hoolios, Carpenter's ace Americana band, will take the stage for a dance party — performing faves from their catalog as well as stunning material from Carpenter's latest solo album, "Poor Girl's Dream."

If all this wasn't properly seductive, it's important to note that the evening also kicks off from 6-7 p.m. with a beer-tasting from the Revival Brewing Company.

CarLeans CD release party, 6 p.m. Saturday, Rose Barn Theater, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, 305 Great Neck Road, Waterford; $10; all ages; thecarleans.com. - The Day
