"Demo Review"

Almost exactly a year ago, The Carletons produced a promising if not scruffy DIY demo and it seems they’ve been working hard to rustle up something a little more direct and better assembled. The downside is that the Preston 17 year olds seem to be playing more of a Sheffield indie sound replete with some northern slang and choppy guitars. But far outweighing this is the almost cacophonous, apparently disorganised shower of smart chords and edgy timings on “Wait For A Minute”, where the track speeds up and down, whilst weird hooklines are jammed into spaces that seem too tight for even a couple of notes. The EP goes on with “Time And Time Again” slapping in more of these great, confusing soundbites all jammed into a melting pot that’s refreshed with at least a dozen ideas every three minutes. This means you have to really listen to The Carletons and decipher their songs, whilst your ears are massaged by the filthy ring of crunched up guitar bashes. “Stop Now” is awesome, with brilliant twangs and simple, familiar ideas combined with a great vocal and melody. The name of the band is a little odd but this is a remarkable home grown effort.
