The Cascade Sun offers an exhilarating new take on pop music. Their sound, incorporating everything from grand pianos and string ensembles to hip-hop beats and synthesizers, reaches much farther than their small-town Midwest roots.

Biography

It's easy to drive through North Dakota without stopping.

The state is completely landlocked, with no beaches or mountains, and lakes you could count on one hand. The people are friendly, but they're few and far between: the state has the second lowest population in the nation. Highway 2 could take you from Crookston, Minnesota to Bainville, Montana, and you wouldn't think you had missed a thing.

But you would have missed The Cascade Sun.

The quintet is a product of Minot, North Dakota, a railroad boomtown whose tremendous speed of growth at the turn of the twentieth century earned it the nickname "The Magic City". Now, over a hundred years later, another kind of magic has enchanted the town – this time, in the form of pop music.

The Cascade Sun was founded in 2010 by its lead singer and songwriter, Mat Charley (21). He was joined by bassist Casey Black (20) and drummer Tim Olson (21), and together the trio began to lay the groundwork that would be finished after enlisting Ben Carlson (19) on guitar and Sam Buchholz (21) on piano and synths. The five of them immediately set to work crafting the sound, image, and identity of the group, which would be solidified over the next year.

The result of this work was their debut EP, "A Scene a Sailor'd Give His Eyes For", released in August of 2011. Its six lush, innovative songs were recorded and produced independently by the band over several months' time. The record's lead single, "Sink", received highly positive attention from the Minot community, as well as regular rotation at the city's premiere radio station, 102.9 FM WGO. Garnering strong sales and positive reviews both online and off, The Cascade Sun's first effort helped establish the band's position as a cutting-edge contributor to the pop music universe.

Its members having all been born and raised in The Magic City, The Cascade Sun feels profoundly connected to its community. To bring relief to Minot after it was devastated by a summer flood that cost $1 billion and over four thousand homes, the band participated in a benefit event headlined by hip-hop superstars The Black Eyed Peas. In addition, the group has performed at dozens of community events, including benefit concerts, fairs, and parties. Minot knows that The Cascade Sun is invested in its hometown.

You probably wouldn't expect it, but there is magic to be found along that flat stretch of Highway 2. These North Dakota natives are pioneering a new approach to pop – an approach that is worth the drive.

Lyrics

Sink

Written By: Mat Charley

I'm not the best, but I'm sure not the worst
I may not be perfect, but I was here first
And I'm not the kind that you leave by the side of the road
I made a promise I thought I could keep
Dove off the rocks, and now I'm in too deep
All the things I was meant to destroy'll cause my lungs to explode
To explode

Everything changes
So shout when you're starting to sink
And I will take you home

Down by the ocean we bottled one wish
Sealed the top, threw it out to the fish
And we sang every prayer that we knew
As it rolled through the waves
Through the waves
We stood hand in hand with our hearts in our throats
Hoping that someone, somewhere, would read what we wrote
But while I was sleeping, you signaled a boat
And I watched as you waved goodbye

Now as I'm standing alone on the shore
I get the feeling I've been here before
Darling, you could return to me
Seven times more
And I'd still hold you 'til...

Astronaut Arms

Written By: Mat Charley

I love you more than
Pretending we're old friends
But I lack the strength
Just to wait
'Til you feel good
But I'll stick around, love
'Til I hear the sound of
Someone else making you laugh
The way I should

Started a fight in the middle of the night
You turned on the lights
And I was the first one home again
When I can't win, I run away

Everyone, everyone, take a bit
Take a little bit

There's no better way to say this
Hold your breath and make one more wish
You and I
Could sail high
Above the ancient world

Started a fight in the middle of the night
You turned on the lights
And I was the first
And so unsure
'Cause I never know what to say

Hopeless after just one taste
I'll wrap my arms around your waist
Your hand in mine
We'll try to find
The best of all the worlds

I love you best when
Pretending we're old friends
But I lack the strength
Just to wait
'Til you feel good
But I'll stick around, love
'Til I hear the sound of
Someone else making you laugh
The way I should

Modelshop God

Written By: Mat Charley

I saw you sculpted rough and raw
As naked as you were in that first week
Before your game of hide and seek
Look, but never touch
It took the darkness such a short and simple time
To try to make you change your mind

I could find a way out
If you would hold the door
I could find a way out
If you would hold the door

Then your cousins and your friends
All offered you their souls to save their skins
But you couldn't let them in
The stars broke loose from where they'd hardly had a hold
A few seconds before
The shattered skies poured out the storm

After months of mourning
You finally saw the shore
It was a scene a sailor
Would give his eyes for
