"The Cash Flow - "The Paperchase EP""

The Cash Flow’s “The Paperchase EP” is the band’s first foray into recording, produced entirely by themselves, the album was recorded entirely in their basement. I'm interested in knowing exactly why they chose to do it themselves, a hard-on for the DIY aesthetic? Cost? Convenience? Maybe even a bit of all of the above? No matter the reason, the quality on the EP really suffers because of it, and it’s a shame because the songs are actually pretty solid. What you get here is an honest representation of the band; they’re not hiding behind multiple takes, layered guitars and auto-tune, something you don’t see very often these days. The end result feels more like you’re standing in the crowd at one of their shows rather than sitting at home listening to an album. Sitting here takes me back to some of their shows I’ve been to, a feat that even some of my favorite albums don’t do.

The songs themselves are pretty solid, catchy pop-punk/rock songs, though two songs do stand-out a bit more than the rest. “When My Disappearing Act Went Wrong” is definitely one of those songs that “makes” an album, as well as their live set, and I think the band knows it since it usually sits toward the end of the set. “For Every King a Crown” is the other song that sticks out, mainly for the break-down toward the end, it’s a piece of music that will have you rewinding the song to hear again and again.

Overall, I’d give the album a B-, its hard to over-look the quality issue from being recorded in a basement, but the songs are good enough to warrant a purchase. Even more so since the band is planning on dropping the price down to $3, which is cheaper than a beer in some places. Expect to see some big things coming from these guys if they keep up quality like this. You can pick up the Paperchase EP at Smartpunk, Itunes or at any of the bands live performances.

Bio

The Cash Flow is anything but the ordinary four-piece rock group. Currently terrorizing the west suburbs of Omaha, NE, and armed with huge plans in the works for all of 2010, these boys can be found laughing ashore at a sea of drowning trends. The group was founded upon nothing more than hard-working Midwest values and an unstoppable desire to succeed, hitting every obstacle head-on.

Shortly after taking the stage for the first time in January of 2009, The Cash Flow began turning heads, opening for major touring acts such as The Swellers, Honor Bright, Sparks The Rescue, The Dangerous Summer, This Time Next Year, After Midnight Project, and This Providence.

Six months later, in June of 2009, The Cash Flow released their debut EP. It was written, produced, recorded, and engineered by the band and proudly titled, "The Paperchase EP." The final mixes were mastered by John Naclerio at Nada Recording Studio, and is currently available on iTunes, Smartpunk, Amazon, or through The Cash Flow’s Big Cartel online store. The song, “For Every King A Crown,” is currently receiving airplay on Omaha’s 89.7 FM Sunday evening broadcasts of,“Planet O.”

As 2009 draws to a close, The Cash Flow gears up for a big year full of twists and turns including a highly-anticipated follow-up set to record in late April with Mark Michalik in beautiful Chicago, IL. With a crew of four best friends, its hard to create anything short of an unforgettable live show or your new favorite song. The band’s quickly growing and ever-expanding fan base in the area among young people demonstrates an undying motivation that screams, “These guys mean business.”
