"What I liked this week"

“Maybe this summer”, from NJ’s The Caterpillar Book, is a CD of perfect radio friendly, mid-tempo pop. Their bio (reprinted below) references The Goo Goo Dolls (post “a boy named goo” album) and Counting Crows, I’d add to that list Train and Matchbox Twenty. They may not be exactly like any of those bands, but if you’re a fan of any of those bands, I think you will probably like this too.

"And The Band Played On"

"...A resilient group of musicians... one listen to the songs already recorded on their upcoming CD "Maybe This Summer", and any fan of R.E.M, the Grateful Dead, the Counting Crows and the like will be rooting for the Caterpillar Book."

"Maybe This Summer CD Review"

It's fitting that The Caterpillar Book formed at an Essex County outdoor music festival dubbed Maplewoodstock, because they seem to aspire to be the kind of classic rock band that headlined the original Woodstock.

The opener, "We Were Free," sets the tone for much of the album — a casual, soft-focused song with a very organic sound. we get plenty of acoustic guitar, piano and a longing for days past with the chorus: "Stand by, remember a time when we were free."

You'll hear shades of the Eagles (the guitar on "Sticks and Stones"), "River"-era Springsteen ("A Girl Like That"), the Doobies (the harmonies and rhythm of "Turning Back"), and '70s Dylan ("Breeding for Brilliance").

The songs on this album are surprisingly well-arranged for a band that's been together a short time.

"Maybe This Summer CD Review"

THE CATERPILLAR BOOK is a collection of a few good friends, who include some cult musicians, such as a member of Hoboken’s Cucumbers (an underrated band) and The Remains from Boston. On their first CD, “Maybe This Summer…” (myspace.com/ thecaterpillar book), they all show their love for pop music, along the lines of, say, Cheap Trick. There is lots of melody, harmonies, and some wicked good vocalizing by Ryan O’Dell. Musicianship and production are in top gear, like a smooth coat of paint that assures they can play at any place from Maxwells to the Sidewalk Café. There are a lot of good songs here, including “Maybe This Summer,” “Time to Go,” “Spring,” “A Girl Like That,” and the catchy coda (which could have been the first song, as well), “Already Wasted.” When some friends who have known each other for a long time assemble and decide to put something together, it can either be self-indulgent or harmonious. Luckily, this is the latter. - Robert Barry Francos--Jersey Beat

Bio

The Caterpillar Book

So everybody asks, "What's the name about?" Check out Trina Paulus "Hope for the Flowers" for this great story on change, hope and becoming everything you can be.

Ry, Dan and Kris have been playing together for 17 years since they met as students at William Paterson University. Two CD’s and several band names later, Vern and John joined the group which is now named, "The Caterpillar Book.” Each brings the influences of his musical upbringing to the sound of The Caterpillar Book. Individually, members of the band have shared the stage and/or performed with such luminaries as The Beatles, The Replacements, The Smithereens, Aerosmith, They Might Be Giants, Too Much Joy, The Connells, Space Hog, Ivy, Cake, Black 47, Us3, The Toasters, and the list goes on and on...........

As well as being multi-instrumentalists, all 5 band members are songwriters and singers which further contributes to the unique mix heard in their original material. "Our goal is to express ourselves as musicians and artists through songs that touch the heart and soul, make you laugh, make you think, make no musical or philosophical compromises and still make you want to dance and enjoy the party."

The Caterpillar Book's new CD is available at CDBaby, digistation, itunes and many other download services.
