"Motor City’s Burning - The Cavity Creeps"

Motor City’s Burning
by Eric Allen

Woodward. Grand River. Cass. It's on these streets that punk rock was created. I’m not talking about the uniform idea of punk, but rather the visceral attitude that is needed to claim the genre as your own. Andre Williams. The MC5. The Ramrods. The Gories. The Motor City is still burning after all these years and the flame of punk rock will never go out.

One example of punk’s eternal spirit in Detroit is The Cavity Creeps. In their short existence the band has become a major player in the scene. “I had just gone through some major shit health-wise and was looking at life as being too short to have regrets,” The Cavity Creeps singer Squirrel says. “I put an ad on Craigslist and on Myspace, where I found Jeff. We found Matt off Craigslist as well. Thank you to Craig.” With Squirrel on vocals, Psycho as skinsman, Jeff on bass and Matt playing guitar, the boys have created a sound that can be likened to The Business, Angelic Upstarts and Blitz. “Well, we aren’t hardcore,” Jeff says. “We have been told we sound like all those great English 'Oi' bands from the early-'80s.“ In the near future, The Cavity Creeps will be opening for punk legends the U.S. Bombs at the Magic Stick as well as recording an E.P. “We start recording the last week of February at Noise Pollution Studios in Warren,” Squirrel says. “We are also going to release a record with a group of great guys, Bullcock from NJ.” - Real Detroit Weekly
