Bio

Gathered under a common desire to expand the horizons of celtic music being created in the Maritimes, The Celtic Umbrella Ensemble is a collaboration of world-class instrumentalists and superb entertainers from Nova Scotia, Canada.

This year The Celtic Umbrella features Cassie & Maggie MacDonald, sisters who bring the stage alive with piano, fiddle, song, and of course... step-dancing! Singer-songwriter Mary Beth Carty, known for her duo Bette & Wallet, adds accordion, guitar, and bones. Founding
member Gillian Boucher delights audiences with her dynamic stage persona and virtuoso skills as a fiddler and dancer. Together, they are a force to be reckoned with!

The Ensemble combines strong Maritime roots with a fascination for other cultures. Each performance transports the listener to Cape Breton, Ireland, and Acadie, then to less-traveled Celtic regions like Norway and Asturias. Violins soar on original ballads Laura and My Horseman, then devilish fiddles drive home sets of jigs and reels. A Capella numbers in Gaelic and French feature stunning harmonies, instrumental compositions introduce new tunes to the trad landscape, and a tag-team style step-dance finale leaves audiences wanting more!

After touring theatre stages of the Maritimes for two seasons, the quartet finished summer 2012 with a Saturday night mainstage performance at Festival Memoires et Racines in Joliette, Québec. Their energetic show received two encores and three standing-ovations, and is sure to go down in festival history!

With songs, fiddles, piano, guitar, accordion and a whole lot of dancing… this dynamic and exciting group puts on one heck of a show that is not to be missed!
