"Spotlight on Musicians"

A relatively new band to the Maine scene, The Charlee Black Band plays a diverse mixture of music with their very own twist on tunes.

The band, based out of Hallowell, attempts to reach out to different genres, performing songs by folks such as Patsy Cline, Pink, the Eurythmics and Gnarls Barley, to name a few.

Charlee Black, the band’s leader, is a pleasant young woman who grew up in northern areas of Maine. One of her biggest influences throughout her youth was Alanis Morissette.

She is joined in the band by Hallowell resident Dan Corbett who plays bass and upright electric bass, and drummer Scott Clough of Litchfield. Both have been around the central Maine area performing in various bands for quite a while. The Charlee Black Band has a lot of energy, often packing the house wherever they perform.

In February, Charlee and the band released their first CD, with a party at Easy Street Lounge in Hallowell. Charlee has a book of songs which she has put together over the years, re-working some of them for the first CD. - Livemainemusic.com

Bio

The Charlee Black Band is the latest offering from the rapidly expanding Maine music scene. Formed in the fall of 2009, the band came together after meeting at open jams in the city of Hallowell. Long known as an oasis where live music and the arts flourish, this fertile ground became the ideal launching pad for this latest incarnation of local flavor. From there, the band developed into one of the area's most sought after live acts. With a sound both familiar and refreshingly new, this trio continues to energize audiences with an interesting blend of indie rock, punk pop, and urban/alt rock. The band's live show consists of a seamless blend of both original material and cover tunes. Where one ends and another begins is the musical alchemy that distinguishes The Charlee Black Band from the average bar band. When this band covers a song, it becomes a fresh reinvention, an evolution with a unique personal stamp that breathes new life into familiar territory.
Charlee Black's vocal delivery ranges dramatically between the influences of Annie Lennox, Ingrid Michaelson, Alanis Morrisettte, Norah Jones, Pink and Patsy Cline. Accompanied by her driving acoustic guitar rhythms, this dynamic combination repeatedly prompts the crowd to their feet for an energetic night of dancing. Rounding out the lineup is Dan Corbett on the uniquely styled electric upright bass, and Scott Clough on drums and percussion. Longtime veterans of the Maine music scene, this powerful rhythm section is a formidable compliment to Miss Black's stage presence.
After a year of developing their sound on various gigs throughout the area, the band went into the studio in the fall of 2010 to capture the growing set of original material. Released in January of 2011, their self titled debut album began to receive immediate attention on the local airwaves, as well as land them a television spot on FOX23's morning show "Good Day Maine". The band is currently gigging throughout the area in support of their album. With an increasingly expanding calendar, The Charlee Black Band looks to have a very busy summer and fall season in 2011.
