"Charlie B - Dreams Come True – Album Review"

By Jaymin Proulx

www.TheCharlieB.com

Charlie B’s debut EP, Dreams Come True, is a tell-tale album of what every parent wants of their son: a young male burgeoning hip hop star to rise to the sky and successfully make an album is reminiscent of the past and hopeful for the future to come.

Charlie B opens with “You Told Me,” a song in homage to his late mother with lyrics:

“You can be anything, you just have to believe...
so believe when I say in the sun when it’s raining
so believe it, because you told me
to be the best and to always give my all
never to let my head down just stand tall

Charlie B lost his mother when he was 16 and through work with his record label CMG, teamed up with A Caring Hand Foundation based in New York City, which provides education and assistance therapy to children who have lost a parent. It’s interesting to note that all proceeds from the EP will be donated to this charity and that every artist on the EP (including Bad Boy Records artist Los and The Presidentz) has experienced the loss of a parent as a youth.

Indeed, it’s a sad experience, but you can’t say Charlie B is brooding or allowing opportunities to pass him by. Watching his videos on Youtube is like witnessing a young Michael Jackson, mainly because of his ingenious dance moves (including doing three forward flip tucks) in sequence on “Made It,” which is the fourth song on the EP. Nevertheless, is the one of the weaker tracks of the EP, given its repetition and the fact that it doesn’t quite catch the rhythm.

Leading into the second track, “Make You Proud,” Charlie brings the energy and delivers. It’s optimistic, it’s catchy and it brings in a back-up vocalist. Here, he demonstrates a clear vocal range, the ability to nail some difficult notes, and furthermore holds those notes for extended periods of time. He shows he can rap well, have fun and clearly brave the elements with “Make You Proud.”

“Believe” shows definite potential for Charlie to gravitate towards the crumpers, clubbers and serious hip hop artists. With “Coast to Coast” he gets his frolic back as he talks up a crush about cruising around and going to the beach. This song is undoubtedly the strongest song on the album.

“Rock Star” is a great ending. It’s full of bass, swagger, grind and guitar. Its running time is on the short side, but it brings the EP together. One thing is clear about Dreams Come True: it does not remain in one tempo and attitude for its entirety. Instead, it contains well-adapted variables and brings freshness and ingenuity.

It would be nice to see Charlie B focus less on an ‘image’ and more on producing an album that is lyrically more powerful. Yet, at this point, it’s difficult to say what his image actually is. But as long as he stays true to himself, it’s without a doubt he will land on his feet like a proverbial cat.

There are quite a few notable local albums coming down the mountain, either now or in the near future. Look, I even made a short list:

Charlie B, "Make You Proud"
The 19-year-old Dallas singer is staying away from the whole "swag" rap scene, settling more into pop and R&B. It suits him, and he certainly has crossover appeal in the current climate of earnest Bieberocity. His new EP, Dreams Comes True, comes out this summer, and "Make You Proud" is the first single.

The biggest accomplishment for most, aside from financial stability and fame, would be to make their parents proud. All of the late nights and early mornings are to ultimately make the ones that brought you into this world exultant.

Charlie B is no different. At the age of seven, he broke into the entertainment industry moonwalking on a stage with over 1,000 people excitedly watching while his peers were most likely playing with Barbies and knee-deep in a game of tag.

Nine years later, Charlie lost his mother to an immense stroke and heart attack. She continues to fuel his resilience and allow him to stay focused on his dream. He is also inspired by the rest of his family especially his father, as seen in his newest Dream Work Conquer film “Make you Proud” featuring Bad Boy Records artist Los.

VEVO released the video last Tuesday and it has since captured over 8,000 views. Jeff Adair has outdone himself again with the direction and cinematography within transitions and overall concept. It is wonderfully illustrated to engage the viewer as a short film with a relatable story line. The dramatic fading and long walk shown in the beginning lights the fire to the next level of Charlie B’s career. Metaphorically, it represents his future as the next great pop artist, performer, and soon-to-be musical heavyweight.

Sometimes as human beings, you have to take a leap of faith to reach your dreams, and this song can and will inspire anyone striving to be more than the status quo. Charlie has managed to gain critical acclaim seemingly overnight by signing with CMG/Bungalo/Universal Records in February of 2011, releasing his debut mixtape "I Am Charlie B” and the singles, “Live it Up” and “Make you Proud.”

The real excitement begins once he releases his debut album, “Dreams Come True” later this summer. Charlie B’s triumphant story is the classic Cinderella Man type of tale. He has no choice but to live it up and continue to make his supporters proud. - Dallas Examiner

"Via Tragedy, Universal Records’ Charlie B Helps “Dreams Come True” for Fans"

Raised in Plainview, Texas, Universal Records signee Charlie B was told many times that he wouldn’t amount to anything by people from his hometown. Worse yet, at the age of 16 after his mother passed away from a stroke, and with his father not around, Charlie B was basically an orphan. Moving on from his loss took great courage and strength, and as he then channeled the trauma of losing his mother to do better for the world through music, Charlie quickly found himself in the favors of Universal Music.
In fact, Charlie B was so affected by his mother’s loss, that it inspired him to team up with A Caring Hand Foundation based in New York City, an organization that provides education and assistance therapy to children who have lost a parent. In doing so, all proceeds from his EP will be donated to this charity, as every individual on the Dreams Come True EP, including Bad Boy Records artist Los and production team The Presidentz, has experienced a devastating loss of a parent as a youth.
Take a look at AllHipHop.com’s sit down with Charlie B, someone who not only has gone through a great deal of struggle to get to this point, but also someone who is truly on the verge of making his Dreams Come True:
AllHipHop.com: Tell me about the Dreams Come True project and what it means to you.
Charlie B: The Dreams Come True project came from me wanting to help kids who were like me and lost a loved one. This project means a lot to me; it’s helped a lot of fans and supporters believe in themselves and their dreams. This project means the world to me. Hopefully, if it can expand to the world, I can give the world the true meaning of inspiration and what happens when you don’t give up on your dreams.
AllHipHop.com: Briefly explain how your childhood shaped a few of these records on the album.
Charlie B: My childhood was a lonely one, I didn’t have many friends and I didn’t hangout with a lot of people. At the age of 16, I lost my mom to a massive heart attack and stroke, and I was always the smart kid in school without the best fashion – just a brain and ambition to want to be somebody. So I mainly focused on dancing in a mirror that I had in my house, and just trying to figure my life out. I came from a small town that didn’t give me too many options, so I had to choose the right path. The “You Told Me” record explains all the things my mom told me when she was still living and around, because it’s the last thing she said to me before she passed away. “Made It” was inspired through everyone back home in Plainview, Texas, and even in my current city, Dallas, Texas, who told me I couldn’t do it.

AllHipHop.com: Any other potential features coming up?
Charlie B: At this moment, none, but I see a few in the near future, can’t say just yet.
AllHipHop.com: What music videos have been planned for this effort?
Charlie B: “Make You Proud” so far, and we are letting the fans determine what my next single and music video will be. I have a lot of fans that like to comment, so it’s a good way to gauge their interest.
AllHipHop.com: What tour dates and or shows have your team set up thus far?
Charlie B: As of now, the focus is expanding and finding the markets where I have the most fans and dominating that market. Tour dates will be coming soon, and I can’t wait.
AllHipHop.com: Explain your role in charitable organizations that support at risk youth and orphans, and how that impacts your music.
Charlie B: It brings the energy and inspirational lyrics out of me; as a ghostwriter, I can write almost any type of song, no matter the genre, but inspiring music that gives orphans and kids at youth centers hope is the music I love to make the most. It’s nothing I have to force; it just comes out. My life story had left me in a dark place without having much hope when I was a kid, so I don’t want them to have to experience that. And if they do experience it, I want them to be able to look through my music and find their favorite song that helps them feel like anything is possible.

Bio

Singing has been a passion of Charlie B's since the age of 7 when he had his first major performance in front of a live audience of over 1,000 students at a local university. Moon walking across stage, Charlie received a standing ovation. This was the start of something big for the budding entertainer.

As Charlie B entered high school he began learning and working as a choreographer. As he has surrounded himself with talented dancers and producers, a great guideline was provided for him to follow.
At the age of 16 Brett Nevelle Collins AKA Charlie B lost his mother to a massive heart attack and stroke. These life altering events created an even greater focus, motivation, and drive for Charlie B to succeed, and fulfil the dream that his mother had seen in him. She is his guiding light.

Other inspirations are his stepmother, father, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and James Brown.
Charlie B has lived in the Dallas area for the last 21 months and in that timeframe has managed to make a pretty big name for himself locally and nationally.

In March 2010 he signed with Collins Management Group and within two months released his first single "Merry Go" independently. The single managed to chart in the Top 10 in adds to radio rotation for online, satellite, college, and FM formats. "Merry Go" received nearly 1,000 spins a week on radio waves for nearly two months and was featured on iTunes for 4 weeks. This fact in conjunction with all of the tangible and intangible talents Charlie B possesses has proven to be a major catalyst for all for all of the Major label attention and early success.

Within the first 18 months of Charlie B's career, he managed to garner a ton of major label attention, and received multiple offers; however, Charlie B signed to CMG/Bungalo/Universal Records in February 2011, which is an independent label based in Dallas, Texas. In April 2012 Charlie B released his debut mix-tape "I Am Charlie" B, two weeks prior to his major debut release of his single "Live It Up". The mix-tape is essentially a full length album that has garnished a ton of attention with nearly 20K downloads in a little over a month. The single "Live It Up" received a great amount for FM airplay in Boston, New York City, Dallas, and some cities in Texas but became an instant hit in clubs and bars throughout the nation.

In early March 2012 Charlie B released his first single “Make You Proud” ft Bad Boy Records artist Los. “Make You Proud” is the first single from the “Dreams Come True” EP which is slated to release late Summer 2012.
