"Jay LaVita leaves hip-hop for R&B, signs new contract"

Change is tough. The feeling of uncertainty can make some anxious, but also make others rise to the occasion.

One of Delaware’s top R&B artists is a shining example of consistency in the face of uncertainty, and now his efforts are beginning to pay off.

Newark native Jay LaVita, 25, is a writer, producer and rising R&B star that found a way to work through adversity and made the tough choice to change his situation. Recently, LaVita’s journey as a music artist has landed him a contract with Starr Media Publishing in New York City where he records with Grammy-award winning engineer Ariel Borujow.

Jay LaVita’s upcoming album, which is slated for release at the end of this year, features big-name producers like Omen and Blaqtuxedo as well rappers like Maino, Dave East and Fred Da Godson, who is on Jay’s new single “Put You On.” The single has gotten the attention of DJs around the country and has been played on radio stations in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami where LaVita recently performed.

Q: When did you make the transition from hip-hop to R&B?

A: Well, I have loved music ever since I was young and started writing raps as far back as I could remember. I started exploring the R&B side of things probably during my freshman year of high school. People would always want me to sing in school so I started to write but really didn’t truly release anything until after I had graduated. When I rapped I used to go by the name Da Issue, and when I released my mixtape I used to single on some of the songs, so that was really my first time putting it out to the public.

Q: When did you decide to totally drop rap and change your name?

A: After a while I realized could do more creatively with my music on the R&B tip. I also felt like everybody was doing hip-hop and the scene was over saturated with rappers, so I decided to focus on singing instead. I ended up changing my name because Da Issue really didn’t have an R&B artist feel to it and it was just time to start over and move totally in a new direction.

Q: How did you come up with the name Jay LaVita?

A: To be honest, I was just on Facebook telling people that I wanted to change my stage name. I threw out a few different names and Jay LaVita got the most response. People really thought it fit my style of music so I ran with it!

Q: So what happened with your previous management that led to your new situation?

A: Well, the team I was working with ended up disbanding and my relationship with one of the co-owners didn’t work out so it was just time to go. I think the change really helped me work even harder to be where I needed to be. I had to start thinking bigger than just the state of Delaware.

Q: How did you link up with Starr Media Publishing?

A: Well at the time I was writing for an artist named Camille who was being looked at by Starr Media and they liked the work I was doing for her. I guess they saw my work ethic and wanted to see what I had outside of the music I was writing for her. They told me they were impressed, but we kept it just a friendship to start out. They told me they would do whatever they could for me and I told them I would do the same. What stood out to me was that they delivered on everything they promised, which had never happened before. We finally started talking contracts and just got it done. It was the right fit for me and I am excited to see what happens.

Q: What are your plans for 2016 album-wise?

A: The album is actually pretty much done ... we are taking our time to market and push it correctly. We are looking to drop it in late 2016 but I don’t have a definitive date set yet. Right now we are focused on pushing my single with Fred Da Godson and making sure we connect with the DJs around the world. The goal this year is to really take over and put Delaware on the map!

"Jay Lavita | Newark, DE"

Jay Lavita discovered a love for music at an early age. At the age of 10, Jay started to record himself with a microphone and a computer. By the age of 12, he was recording in professional studios and learning how to hone his craft.

1. First introduce yourself and tell us about where you're from and how the underground scene is there for an indie artist!

A: My name is Jay LaVita, a singer-songwriter born in Chester, PA, but raised in Newark, DE. The underground scene in Delaware is extremely supportive, they’ve been holding me down since day one. Although we’re a small state, Delawareans stand behind local artists to the very end. Quite frequently, our state is looked over, so if one person makes it, that gives us the opportunity to be recognized. I planned on being that person [laughs] .

2. What has been most rewarding for you since pursuing your music career?

A: The most rewarding situation for me is being blessed to have such a great team that believes in me. Throughout my career, I've dealt with a lot of people with hidden agendas. The type that linger around for the end result, not willing to put in work where it's needed. The Starr Media Group C.E.O.s, Dre & Ron have been men of their word since the beginning. They believe in me and my talent, and so far, the results are stupendous.

3. How would you describe your style and sound as an artist?

A: There’s only one word I can use to describe my style and that's “Versatile”. Being a huge fan of hip-hop allowed me to perfect my metaphors and delivery. I can creatively give you choppy raspy vocals in one instance, and melodic harmonious vocals in another. Overall, I have a warm sound, and it seems to fit with various kinds of instrumentation.

4. Who were your musical influences as a child and who are they today?

A: As a child, my musical influences were Michael Jackson (of course), Sade, Denise Williams, Earth Wind and Fire; just to name a few. At the present time, Joe, Ryan Leslie, Chris Brown and Brandy influentially play a part in my career.

5. Tell us about your new single “Put You On”. Who's the producer here and how'd the song come about? How'd you link up with Fred The Godson and how did you all vibe in the studio?

A: My new single, ”Put You On” was birthed when I received an instrumental from the homie, Digital Beatz. The beat was so crazy that the words just came to me. innovatively, I freestyled most of that track. Once the reference track was complete, I emailed to my manager (Dre), and his response was “Yo, the track is dope! We need a feature, and I think I got the perfect guy for the song”. The perfect one was Fred The Godson and he was feeling the track. In less than 24hrs, we had the song back in our emails. Straight like that! It was just one of those situations that was executed perfectly and I thank Fred for blessing that track.

6. Being on a record label can get hectic at times. How did you choose Starr Media Group as a home and what can we expect from the label?

A: Initially, I was brought on as a writer for a prospective artist of Starr Media Group. After hearing more of my music, and seeing my work ethic, they wanted to bring me on as an artist. As a team, things don’t really get as hectic, it seems to always run smooth with myself, Dre and Ron. Although, as an artist, things have a tendency to become chaotic, they keep me grounded and focused on the prize. As a family, we have our moments, but we bounce right back and continue grinding it out. As far as Starr Media Group goes, expect to see much more from our team in the future.

7. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years musically?

A: Literally, 5 years would be too long for me [chuckles], Musically, I see myself being that brand that everyone is talking about. The guy that writes dope songs, whether it’s for me or for someone else and being featured on a track with a major artist. I want to be touring, growing financially by the day, and continuously giving my fans classic hits.

8. Is there anything else you'd like your fans and our readers to know?

A: Humbly speaking, I’d like your readers and my fans to expect a lot of hot music featuring a few of your favorite artists to come your way. Please support me and don’t forget to download my music on iTunes. I’d like for you to follow me, @JayLavita on your favorite social media accounts to keep up with my every move. Ask your favorite DJ to play my song, so I can be seen in your city. My team and I would like to say, Thank you for this interview and allowing me to interact with your readers.
