The Classics

The Classics

BandRockAlternative

We're a young, energetic rock band that hails from Northwestern University. Combining elements of both modern and classic rock, our music straddles the lines of pop, indie, and alternative.

Biography

The classics are "truly original," just like every other band on sonicbids. This is their "unique" story:

Formed in the Winter of 2008 with only a loose collection of musical ideas
written and no set sound in mind, The Classics' chemistry allowed them
to finish material at a rapid rate without sounding forced. They booked
their first show in 3 weeks based solely on a poorly
recorded bedroom demo. Bringing together musicians from very
different backgrounds in the rock world, their influences
span pop, indie, post-rock, metal, alternative, and electronic. The group's influences
are as eclectic as their majors, and include
Weezer, Radiohead, the Beatles, Explosions in the Sky, Muse, and a large group of
pop punk bands such as Green Day and My Chemical Romance. The group's
main strengths lie in their collective songwriting ability and genuine awesomeness.

They recently finished recording their first EP, Mouse Dollar, which is available now.

Your Treasured Chest

Written By: Christopher Byrum

If I'd have known the water
would be this deep
I'd not have thrown all my chips in
I'd not have bet so steep

I was just trying to cool
off my feet
when the first wave came crashing
down on me

And I know
it's better to leave it alone
when those words
fly out of your mouth in that tone

So I tried swimming back to
what I know
but I got caught up in the
undertoe
and I looked around and saw no
boats or sand
so I went under with the
help of a guiding hand

and I know
it's better to leave it alone
when those words
fly out of your mouth in that tone

Another promise that I
know you will not keep
I always find myself
in way too deep

But to sing myself afloat that seems
an awfully foolish song
I mean Hell I've waited
this long

Interlude

And I know
it's better to leave it alone
when those words
fly out of your mouth in that tone

And I know
it's better to leave it alone
than to drift somewhere
out there on my own

Another promise that I
know you will not keep
I always find myself
in way too deep

But to sing myself afloat that seems
an awfully foolish song
I mean Hell I've waited
this long

I swam and swam
but at the bottom of the sea
an empty treasure chest
awaited me

Well I shut the lid
and swallowed up the key
I'll find the other fish
waiting in the sea...

Amateur Themes

Written By: Chris Byrum

I know this progression
it ain't exactly new
I know that this melody
has been heard in a million tunes
but I'm not talented enough
for jazz metal or blues
and sometimes tradition
can be what is best for you

I had a teacher she said
"chase your dreams"
but I got caught up, I got caught up in amateur themes

Like Mortal Kombat 2
on novice it seems

I tried my hand at originality
I took one sip and said
"it's not my cup of tea"
and I'm no newcomer to mediocrity
I'm trying hard just to
get that 3.3

I had a teacher she said
"chase your dreams"
but I got caught up, I got caught up
in amateur themes

Goblin Lips

Written By: Chris Byrum

It was bravery
inspired by alcohol
that let me dance with you
at the fresher's ball
and outside Potter Row
the line's 100 feet tall
the beginning of a chase
that could last all fall

So kiss these Goblin Lips and
let the wine roll down your spine
if it's what you're worried about
I assure you, we've got time

It was bravery inspired by alcohol
that would eventually
be my downfall

So kiss these Goblin Lips and
let the wine roll down your spine
if it's what you're worried about
I assure you, we've got time

Set List

Our typical set list covers anywhere from 4 to 10 songs. Though we prefer to play originals, we also enjoy the crowd's reaction to occasional covers:

We typically play through our entire EP, along with 2 covers (usually Weezer's "Sweater Song" and a rock version of DJ Sammy's "Heaven")
