":) ARTMUSICCRAFTCOMEDY at The Smiling Buddah (:"

One of the bands that was particularly good was Fionna Tough's band Mango Angle. The amazing hostess definitely wowed the crowed with her phenomenal vocals, cheerful commentary, and delicious cupcakes. I will gladly take part in any event that involves Fionna Tough! What an amazing night!

Here are some pictures of the event!

And lastly Mango Angle. They were awesome. - Malinda Prud'homme @blogspot.com

"Anything but Obtuse: Lunch with Mango Angle"

There's no better way to start this off than having a lunch date with a hot, up-and-coming Toronto-based band!

From Left: Drew, Mike, Fionna, Alicia, Adam.

Without further ado, I give you Mango Angle!

Lunch Date: Mango Angle (consisting of: Fionna Tough on lead vocals, Alicia Tough on keys and vocals, Drew Shannon on guitar and vocals, Micheal Pereira on bass, and Adam Pereira on drums), July 15 2012.

Lunch Location: BQM, the Ossington location (210 Ossington Ave.)

What we all ate: Fionna and Alicia shared a lovely poached pear salad with blue cheese and toasted almonds. Fionna then also had The Natural, a burger with red onion, pickle and a garlic aioli (adding her own special flair, Fionna’s burger also included avocado and roasted red peppers).

Alicia and Drew both had the BQM, looking yummy with its horseradish and garlic aioli and caramelized onions. Mango Angle fans will be interested to know that Drew eats his fries with mustard. How odd!

After some indecision, Micheal (or “Mike” as he is sometimes known) had the Banquet burger, a true feast with bacon, cheddar, garlic aioli, red onion and pickle.

Taking a chance, Adam had the burger of the day, topped with pineapple, jalapeno aioli, blue cheese and bacon.

My initial choice was a pulled pork sandwich, but they didn’t have any that day! This just means I have to return to give it a try. Instead I went with the Smoked Red, a delicious burger topped with smoked white cheddar, roasted red peppers and chipotle sauce. Yum!

Lunch Review: So many tasty options to choose from! Fear not, vegetarians. There are many tasty things for you too (and gluten free options as well!). The burgers were giant, and bigger than our mouths (because of the generous amount of toppings). Each burger is cooked to order (I ordered mine medium, and that’s what I got). My favourite part about this place is that all [meat] burgers are made from local, naturally raised, hormone free beef. This makes it a little less daunting when eating out and having to worry about what foods we are putting into our bodies – something we all agreed about! My burger was delicious, moist (I hate this word, but feel it’s appropriate here), and perfectly flavourful. I also had a ceasar, which was the ideal accompaniment for my meal. While I thought the food was great, our server was also so lovely – I am a horrible person and forgot her name! But maybe she wouldn’t want it featured in the blog anyways. All in all, I would recommend a trip to BQM. If you want to come with me when I try the pulled pork, let me know.

Review of Mango Angle: What a fantastic group of people! Not only are they great musicians, but they are also courteous, conscientious, companionable, and comedic. Having been to a few Mango Angle shows, I can say that their music is fun and danceable, but also very clever and interesting. This is no surprise once you have a chance to sit down and chat with this multifaceted group that jokingly refers to themselves as a “family band”. Though I suppose it’s not really a joke, since the band does contain two sets of siblings: Alicia and Fionna hail from Sudbury, while Mike and Adam grew up in Toronto. Drew, originally from London, rounds it all out.

Mango Angle will woo you with their music, and their charm, talent and attractiveness make it easy to have crushes on all of them. I am looking forward to the day they achieve great success and receive many accolades for their excellent musicianship, because then I can say that I did the first interview with them! Mango Angle gets 5/5 glasses of wine in my books.

But don’t take my word for it! Read on below for the full interview, and be sure to check out their upcoming shows!

July 17, The Rainbow Bistro, Ottawa

August 9, The Velvet Underground, Toronto

Discography

Get Movin' with the Coconuts was released in November of 2013.

Each of the Coconuts songs was designed with a specific purpose in mind, whether it be warming up for an active day, playing games, acting and performing, transitioning from outside to inside, cleaning up, or settling down. Having children take on creative movements and dance to music enables integration of sensory, cognitive and motor functioning with self-esteem and body awareness.
The album can be used in the classroom in accordance with Ontario Elementary School curriculum’s DPA (Daily Physical Activity) initiative. The songs are filled with lively beats and lyrics to get kids moving with creativity and fun.
There are also 3 transition songs included:
• Math Transition
• 4 Chord Transition
• Lullaby
These songs can be used to develop smooth routine transitions throughout the day, in the classroom or at home. 4 Chord Transition and Lullaby are perfect for calming children down after recess or physical activity, creating a focused state of mind required for learning.
Get moving and get engaged with The Coconuts!

Bio

Toronto-based musician and elementary school teacher Steve O'Gorman created The Coconuts to complement the Ontario curriculum. His love of music and learning combined with his warm, easy-going nature make for an energetic and engaging performance both live and on the album.
Sisters Fionna Tough, a sustainable farmer, and Alicia Tough, an Occupational Therapist, contribute animated vocals and performance.

Elementary school teacher Matthew Allard studied music at Oxford prior to taking teacher education at OISE. His keyboard and transitional songs add depth to the album.

Mike Pereira, Toronto-based musician and illustrator created the album artwork and contributes sophisticated pop bass and synthesizer sounds to live performances.
