"The Colour Elect: Back To The Sky"

L.A.'s The Colour Elect is a band made up of friends that got together last year and started writing and performing music for the sheer love of it. That's the whole story, no fluff or pretense. Their alt-rock is energetic, doesn't run over itself with misplaced vocals or instrumentals and just plain sounds damn fine. They've recently released their first EP, Back To The Sky, and it contains six songs that would sound good on a CD or in your local club. Actually, there's so much musical diversity in the songs it's a testament to just how talented this band is. The hardworking band released the EP on their own and relies primarily on outlets such as this to spread the word about them. Consider the word spread, at least from here. Highly recommended, hopefully a band you'll hear lots from down the road. - Local Vertical Blog

"Poptarts: The Colour Elect"

Procrastination is a problem that affects many well-intentioned people, and it seems that musicians are often the most heavily influenced by the urge to waste time. Lucky for us, The Colour Elect took some age-old advice from Ben Franklin—”You may delay, but time will not”— to heart. Formed in Los Angeles during the last months of 2008, lead-singer Josef Gordon, guitarist Kellen Mills and drummer Robb Hutzal wrote 12 songs together during a four months span. After deciding they wanted a more guitar driven sound, they invited guitarist Chris Wrate to join the band followed by bassist Leo B to round out the ensemble. By the summer of 2009, they were a fully-formed band poised and ready to take on LA.

The Colour Elect is not only a band of insanely productive songwriters, but a band full of diverse musicians that bring many different genres to the table. Hailing from locations all over the US and world, the band is a combination of “a pop/soul lead-singer, a metal-shredding lead-guitarist, a hip-hop drummer, a rocky blues guitarist and a funk-soul bassist.” While this may seem like one of those instances where, “too many cooks spoil the soup,” The Colour Elect’s sound is surprisingly streamlined as well as unique. Their debut EP Back To The Sky was released this past September, less than a year after the band was formed, and they’ve played shows all over the LA area. - Madi with Ourstage.com

Bio

We are The Colour Elect; a multi-national rock-pop band based out of Los Angeles who look and sound different from everyone else in a genre saturated with the same. While maintaining a true rock sound musically, our lead-vocalist’s background in pop and R&B help to ensure that nothing we write or perform sounds too typical of our genre. But he’s not the only reason our sound is so eclectic.  The winning balance of ingredients here also include a metal-shredding lead-guitarist, a hip-hop R&B turned rock drummer, a rocky blues guitarist, and a funk-soul bassist.

Our story: We formed in Los Angeles in late 2008 by lead-singer Josef Gordon, originally from Houston, Texas, and guitarist Kellen Mills of San Jose, California. Our duo became a trio when we invited Canadian drummer Robb Hutzal into the mix. The three of us felt an instant musical and personal chemistry and in the span of about four short months, we managed to write 12 songs together. Moving at such lightning speed, and quickly developing a heavily guitar driven sound, we recruited our good friend, guitarist Chris Wrate from Wisconsin, who eagerly jumped onboard. One final component was still obviously missing, so in the summer of 2009 The Colour Elect brought on bassist Leo B., originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, to complete the rhythm section; and thereby finalizing our roster. Our dedication and hard work has allowed us to complete our debut E.P. titled “Back to the Sky” in September of 2009. We have since then been regularly playing live shows in the Los Angeles Area and constantly winning over new fans.

Having five very different backgrounds and upbringings, with various musical histories, our sound also reflects the diverse influences that shaped us individually as musicians; acts including: U2, John Mayer, Coldplay, Muse, Michael Jackson, The Chili Peppers, and many more have all played their role in shaping the distinct sound of The Colour Elect.
