The Contemporary Lovers straddles genres to build an infectious, heartwarming atmosphere. Our music combines Jazz, Folk, Rock and Popular music to create something unique and inviting.

Biography

The Contemporary Lovers are a genre-crossing, heart-warming, multi-talented, and musically intelligent band from Vancouver, BC, Canada.  The core of this group is a trio formed by Anndreyah Vargas (vocals, glockenspiel, tap dancing), Cole Schmidt (guitar, compositions), and Alex Kelley (upright bass, compositions); however, they are often joined by a drummer and have an artillery of auxiliary musicians on hand, including a clarinetist, a trumpeter, and a violinist.

The Lovers' unique brew of music is characterized by solid, creative, and interactive instrumental playing and a combination of beautifully composed and tastefully improvised material, all of which is topped off by Miss Vargas' soulful vocals. The group's two songwriters each add their own distinct styles to the mix: Kelley's compositions are catchy and melodic with heart-wrenching lyrics, comparable to the music of Brian Wilson and Tom Waits; Schmidt's compositions are intellectual, multi-faceted and exciting. While most of the group's material is original, they also enjoy playing covers of many of their favourite songs, which demonstrate how varied their influences are: their repertoire includes arrangements of music by Nick Drake, Horace Silver, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys.  The Lovers are all talented improvisers as well as gifted performers who have an uncanny knack of hitting their audience right in the heart.

All the members of the Contemporary Lovers hold Bachelor of Music degrees from North Vancouver's acclaimed Capilano University Jazz Studies program, and can be found individually throughout British Columbia's lower mainland playing, singing and dancing with various other ensembles.

Lyrics

This Silent Romance

Written By: Alex Kelley

Won't somebody signify,
or is it too late.
I'd like to apologize...
for those who've had to wait.
All you hearts who broke so long ago
that they just can't relate -
listen now...
can I get a witness?

This silent romance
has got to end.
I'm all but blown apart,
torn by the things you never said.
I'd put you down
if I thought I had a chance,
but it's over now
this silent romance

This mouth of mine
will never mend.
This wooden smile
can barely pretend.
I'd take you out,
if I thought that I could bend
but it's over now
this silent romance

If I could only speak my mind,
still I know, it's not enough.
Letting every day just waste away
because I won't speak up.

This heart of mine
can be so bland.
It grows so terribly cold
when it tries to be a friend
I'd walk away
if I could make a stand,
but it's over now
this silent romance.

Maybe all I hear is second hand,
still I know, you're on the take.
Do you really think
if you don't cry those tears
that this heart won't break.

I'd have to say
and you can mark my words.
If there's a way
to make myself heard.
Come some fine day,
but I just don't know how
so it's over now
this silent romance.

(S'cuse me, could you maybe,
consent to bein' my baby, tell me
what are you doin' this
Friday
Night.)

Fresh Faces

Written By: Cole Schmidt

Fresh pages need words
fake friends find falses
Fresh pages need words like
new Lovers need pulses

and we try continuously

without a shake we cry
without a tear to dry
we try

Fresh faces need books
more words without meaning
New music needs hooks
less hurt without feeling

and we try continuously

These days I'm not so sure..

that these,
Old shelves will carry the weight of new love with old hate

Bag O' Bones

Written By: Alex Kelley

You're a bag o' bones, you are
Don't go looking for a heart to hold
there ain't nothing left here of a soul
Just a bag o' bones

You're a clean machine, you are
Don't go asking for my sympathy
There's nothing left here I could feel
For a clean machine

And when you're crying
It's all you do is waste your tears
And when you're dying
It's nothing but twisted gears

Just a pound of sawdust
That's all it takes to make you rust
You're just like a timepiece bought
in a secondhand store or an old junk show
Who'da thought they'd make you just to waste away
You old bag o' bones

Da Gautch

Written By: Cole Schmidt/Shannon Scott

All around me the air is humming
I hear the turn of the tide is near
such a melody tells me something
I've been seeing it growing unclear

Feel the rhythm it's grooving in me
This wind is pushing me right side round
I'm just letting this new wave take me up
Get moving, up from the ground

Watch it go
Not gonna slow
Anything down
Changes the sound

Flying high on this new sensation
Got me shivering to the bone
I've got a notion that moves me in this dream
and I'm feeling it closer to home

Pull me into this world of play, cause
I'm getting caught in this twisted wind
Free my soul like a legend living
Rockin' and rollin' in peacock skin

Feel it burn
Maybe we learn
Finding a turn
The sound is changed

Take it easy today
Lost in time I play
Seems I can't sail away
Trapped in song I stay

Where I want to go
I never know
Where I want to go
Get on up, get running

What I want to do
I don't know without you
What I want to do
Get on up, get running

Take it easy today
Lost in time I play
Seems I can't sail away
Trapped in song I stay

All around me the air is humming
I hear the turn of the tide is near
Such a melody tells me something
I've been seeing it growing unclear

Feel the rhythm it's grooving in me
This wind is pushing me right side round
I'm just letting this new wave take me up
Get moving, up from the ground
