"The Shattered Monkey in Caimbridge, MA"

Then there were The Corduroys. They call themselves casual rock for casual people and that's just what they are. They write material that shows many elements of good songwriting and project it in a way where it just becomes a part of everyday life. It's like they were always there.

"The Corduroys: 12/20/05, The Nutty Irishman, Bay Shore, NY"

In today’s local music scene, one can often feel pushed to extremes- sometimes against his will. If you’re not being slapped in the face with calculated, pretentious “look how different we are” sonic Tourette’s syndrome, you are being lulled into a stupor with music so sickeningly derivative that it makes the classic rock station seem cutting-edge. Last night at the Nutty Irishman in Bay Shore, Long Island, it was a profound relief to hear some great rock n’ roll that feels familiar, while at the same time inspiring daydreams about the possibilities of the genre in the future.

The Corduroys are Aaron Palmadessa on lead guitar and vocals, Ben Kumpf on rhythm guitar and vocals, Dan Ouimet on percussion and Dave Rodriguez on bass. Their website gives the simple description “casual music for casual people”- this is fitting because these guys play like they have nothing to prove, executing their rock/country/blues/pop fusion with a confident swagger that lets the music take care of the bombast. From the anthemic soul of “Cash in Your Pocket”, to the melodic, Beatlesque punch of “Sad Girl”, to the driving southern rock stomp of “Speak”, to the Johnny Cash on crank strains of “Fetish”, the Corduroys know how to give you faith again in the power of song-reinterpreting the influences from the past, pushing them forward, and most importantly, not ramming their musical conclusions down your throat- letting the music speaks for itself. Aaron’s soaring leads meld seamlessly with Ben’s front-porch rhythm. Dan and Dave hold down a rock solid bottom end that hits you in the chest and drives the whole damn bus. Sonic comfort food that inspires you to get up from the table and explore.

Check out these guys as soon as you can. Wear your casual corduroy’s and leave your high horse at the door.

"Smart feel-good alt rock, delicious guitar sounds and hooks"

This debut recording is a major success for the Corduroy boys. They certainly know their craft and exactly how to deliver this fun style of music in a honest and effective way. Upbeat catchy tracks such as Question, Closin In', and This Time, got my feet stompin on first listen. Some nifty guitar work on all the tunes, perhaps my favorite being the jam/groove oriented Blue Door, where Palmadessa shines as an aggressive front man with major chops. Also, the smooth delivery and vocal stylings of Ben Kumpf provide a perfect compliment to Palmadessa in songs such as Whiskey Sale, Battleground, and standout track Cash in your Pockets. This is a disc to check out for fans of catchy hooks, vintage guitar, and solid no frills songwriting. - Jon Preddice
