"Katy Natives to Perform on TV"

Two Katy hometown boys will be showing the Houston area what they’ve got as they perform with their band on television the morning before Christmas.

The Costigans will perform on Fox 26 Morning Show Friday at 9:30 a.m.

The band was formed by John Najm and David Kirkland, two longtime childhood friends from Katy.

Najm, who sings and plays guitar, began playing in garage bands since junior high. He began performing on stage in front of audiences in high school and knew that was what he wanted to do.

Kirkland, who sings and plays keyboard, began teaching himself piano in ninth grade. He wanted to pursue a career playing basketball but was diagnosed with cancer his junior year of high school. Kirkland overcame the challenge and attended the University of Notre Dame, continuing with music as a hobby.

The two friends have been living on the same street since they were eight or nine, but in the summer of 2008, they decided to come together to write and record their first song.

Najm and Kirkland recruited other members to form a group, and their careers took off from there.

Current members also include Alex Garrido on drums, Edgar Lopez on lead guitar and vocals and Pedro Berrizbeitia on bass and vocals.

The Costigans have won Battle of the Bands and have had several songs rank No. 1 on Supernova.

Musical influences include The Beatles, Oasis, Nirvana, Goo Goo Dolls, Michael Jackson, Elton John, The Stone Roses, The Smiths, Kiss and Bush. - Katy Times

Bio

The Costigans were formed by John Najm and David Kirkland, two long time childhood friends from Katy, TX. John, the veteran of the group, began playing guitar in garage bands as early as junior high school when he started on the guitar. From his early childhood when he spent his time singing to Michael Jackson hits to his junior high years when he began performing in front of audiences on stage, he always knew he wanted to be a rock star. In High School, he began a band with his classmate and drummer Alex Guerrdo. After experimenting with different styles with Alex, the duo’s sound began to evolve. But it wasn’t until John began collaborating with David that The Costigans began to take shape. Although friends since 8 and 9 years of age, when David moved in on the same street, they had never thought of playing music together. While John had his eyes set on performing for years, David, a self taught musician, had never given any thought to being in a band. He always had an ear for music, and began teaching himself the piano in 9th grade, when he learned his first song, Fur Elise. But he was too busy chasing his dreams of making it to the NBA to concentrate fully on music…That didn’t work out too well. After battling cancer during his junior year of high school, David finished up and headed off to the University of Notre Dame, continuing with music as a hobby. It wasn’t until he finished up his first year and returned the next summer that David and John began collaborating. John had been a one man work of art during the past year, writing and recording his own songs in his home studio while Alex was away, but during the summer of 2008, David and John wrote and recorded their first song. It wasn’t official right away, but that summer is when The Costigans began. The two joined creative forces and focused on writing as many songs together as they could. After going through numerous band members, Alex thankfully returned. John recruited lead guitarist Edgar Lopez after being introduced through his cousin, and bassist Pedro Berrizbeitia joined soon after. With the five together, their creative potential began to emerge as they wrote and recorded over 60 songs; gaining over 14,000 fans on MySpace in under a year, winning Battle of The Bands, selling out multiple shows, placing second in a National Battle of the Bands, reaching number one on the top 10 charts on Supernova.com with multiple songs, being featured on the front page of Katy Times newspaper, and performing on Fox News morning show. But that’s not near enough for them. With their passion driving their vision, they won’t be satisfied until their music is heard around the world.
