"The Courtesans"

At first glance, The Courtesans seem intriguing and enticing. Four beautiful girls, dressed in delicate lingerie and vintage gothic attire; they are the epitome of every man’s wildest dream. The band encompasses four members; Sinead La Bella, Saffire Sanchez, Agnes Jones, Victoria Brown. The girls come from quite a variety of locations – Holland, Ireland, Poland and England.

Their debut album titled “1917” was released around two months ago and their current single, “Genius” is a combination of sweeping verses and a captivating chorus. Genius provides a real insight into the overall feel for what to the album is like. The track is an illicit mixture of hypnotic guitar and sensual vocals – reminiscent of an early, slowed down and mellow version of Evanescence.
The introduction to the song is a haunting vocal from Sinead La Bella, followed by a chugging guitar. The first line “holding a gun to his head she said, do you love me?’ captivates you and grips you like a vice. No aspect of this track is boring, or implies a “work in progress”.

It is tight, polished and an impressive showcase of not only impeccable vocal ability but of a deep understanding of musical arrangements and a genuinely great song.

After repeated exposure to the track the lyrics, as well as the embedded emotions of the track will be stuck to you like glue.

The album was released a couple of months ago via their Pledge Campaign to Pledgers only, as a Pledgers exclusive. The general release of the album is planned for August with the single “Genius” scheduled for release just prior to that. - Global Onslaught

The Courtesans – Genius – Track Review

Tom Coombs

Every now and again a true bit of pleasure hits my ears, and swells into the mind to the point of explosion and the single ‘Genius’ by all female rock, pop, trip-hop band The Courtesans is one of these rare pleasures.

The London based band is made up of Sinead La Bella (Vocals), Saffire Sanchez (Guitar), Agnes D. Jones (Bass) and Victoria Brown (Drums) and they describe their music as Erotic, cinematic, atmospheric and as addictive as Absinthe. And you know what? They are right and the green fairy certainly visited me.

Firstly (even though mentioned in previous reviews) the track should be the title track of Bond 24, the so far not titled film due to it being full of cinematic atmosphere and a darkness that really seeps into every part of your soul, making hairs stand up on the back of the neck. Plus the first line “Holding a gun to his head she says, do you love me?” Says it all.

The trip-hop styles of ‘Genius’ are done to perfection and really give it a much bigger sound as well as making it have this futuristic steam punk vibe. What really blew my mind was vocalist Sinead La Bella who is a true talent, think Adele and Amy Lee (Evanescence) combined and you will only get close to the sound of her voice. She is more like a siren luring men to their deaths at sea, than a London based vocalist.

This is not a fast paced in your face track, the sounds are melodic and stroll you through the vocals, but with heavy guitar and pounding beats, it gives you more of a feeling than just the music of a song. The full single has some great sounding guitar hooks, soaring choruses and Sinead La belle’s ethereal voice which all come together to create a song of wonder. Many songs can’t create a scene in your mind but this does in a truly unique fashion. The dark cinematic sound that would fit nicely into a contemporary gothic horror is what makes this whole track a pure delight or should I say pure ‘Genius’(sorry it had to be done) to listen to. The Courtesans are new to me but I for one have fallen in love with the sound of the four seductresses.

The Courtesans single ‘Genius’ is off their debut album ’1917′ which is set to be released on September the 8th. I advise to check these ladies out if it the last thing you ever do.

"New Music: The Courtesans – Genius"

Its difficult to describe Courtesans. The London all-girl four piece, Sinead La Bella (vocals), Saffire Sanchez (guitar), Agnes D. Jones (bass) and Victoria Brown (drums), release their debut single “Genius”, ahead of their debut album “1917”, which comes out on September 8th.

Genius is littered with these huge block chords, heavy and deliberate, and La Bella’s vocal has something of the heavy rock about it, as strong as it is affecting. But then there’s this symphonic Bond-Soundtrack about it as well, and then these swathes of synths that weight in, letting the song have this multi faceted, multi genre, multi coloured feel about it. Is dark, and ambitious and glorious pop music.

Its joined by a video which considers the expectation on women, highlighting the unattainable perfect woman. It nods its head at childhoods ending too soon, the ageing process from the point of view of the Botox friendly, slimming world worshipping class, to the girls themselves, slowly being burned at the stake for their crimes, aka believing in individuality. Until that video premieres next week though, gorge away on the audio. - Back Seat Mafia

Bio

... BLOW BY BLOW!

LIGHT: Sinead La Bella was known around London as a wild card. Sex and drugs and rock n roll were the vices of choice. She often woke from restless dreams filled with intoxicating scents, long, lost hours and memories of dark debauchery. But she wanted more – much more.

DARKNESS: Providence reigns supreme, and so it was that Sin met Jones - The bass doctrine of the foreseen revolution. A mysterious nowhere-girl with a cryptic past whom after a kiss from the Absinthe fairy in an ill-lit bar in London’s Soho, confessed all to Sin about her unfulfilled love of music, La Bella knew it was a sign… and the union was sealed.

They had a voice and rhythm yet they were incomplete … They craved the angelic chords and driving heart beats scribed by the devil’s own hand that had been playing in their ears. They needed to seek out the names to the faces that they had been seeing in their minds eye for what seemed like centuries

REBEL: After many days and nights of combing through the darkest, most hidden and dangerous corners of foggy London town, they found Saffire shining through the dark. A demon with a guitar strapped to her back. Sanchez was razor-sharp - a highly unstable chemical substance with the dangerous element of unpredictability!

TEMPTATION: Now the only missing ingredient was a backbone, one who could hit the skins hard and fast whilst preaching peace, love and music. Miss Victoria Brown must have found one of the encoded messages left around town ….. Invisible to most, yet unmistakable to the enlightened. She could no longer ignore the hypnotic pounding of the drum that was calling her.
Victoria heard the call, understood completely and followed her destiny.

Sparks flew, eyes locked and half smiles played upon their lips as they fell slowly down the same rabbit hole to a secret, long forgotten place in their minds where they would devise a plot for the demise and downfall of homogenized sound and the rise and exaltation of powerfully, seductive music wrapped tenderly in the feminine form.
