"The Crunge – Freedom Festival 2011"

Who are The Crunge you ask? Toronto’s hippest Led Zeppelin tribute band. I was given the honour of a media pass for the 2011 Freedom Festival in Queens Park to photograph these guys and gal as they tore up the main stage.

At first I didn’t know what to expect. I had never seen them perform ever. Man, was I ever blown away!

The spot on Guitar Player (Cam West) rocked out wickedly to black dog while the bassist (Mark Hyer) played immaculate homage to Dazed and Confused. Bronwyn West truly stole the show with her powerful vocals that hypnotized the crowd. None of these covers would have ever come together without the talented Jonny Yeu keeping the pace throughout the set on the drums.

Their set was intelligently put together from start to finish and included a great pounding drum solo. Lets just say the crowd wasn’t happy when they left the stage after their last song. Admittedly I was on their side. I couldn’t get enough of The Crunge!

You can check out their upcoming local gigs on their myspace page here. You can also find tunes, photos, & video.

Although I was there specifically to film this band, I was in the pit and around the stage for most of the day. I will report on the rest of the day’s festivities once I finish editing the pics. For now, here are The Crunge pics for you to enjoy. - Magellan Digital Photography

"The Youngsters that bring the Raw Energy"

I saw an amazing, YOUNG Led Zeppelin tribute band called "The Crunge". I have seen many Zeppelin bands play many times, and while they look nothing like Led Zeppelin, the female singer, the brother on guitar, the bass and drums in tune..THEY LOOK LIKE THEY JUST GOT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL.

They really nail the Led Zeppelin sound - in fact the best new young Led Zeppelin tribute band I have ever heard, a lot of raw energy, and I sure have heard my fair share! JUST RAW SOUND AND THEY PLAY SONGS THAT YOU WOULD NEVER THINK OF HEARING IN A BAR..

THEY PLAYED A COUPLE OF SHOWS AT SCHUEY'S BAR AND GRILL AND ALL I HEARD WAS POSITIVE COMMENTS..

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND KEEP ON SPREADING THE GOOD SOUND OF LED ZEPPELIN .

Bio

The Crunge is a Led Zeppelin Tribute Band hailing from Toronto, Ont. A lot younger than most Zeppelin, or any other Tribute acts on the road, The Crunge has much more to offer than your typical tribute.

With a focus on the first half of Zeppelin's career, the band means to portray a younger, passionate, yet even greener Zeppelin, that saw them working out new songs during Dazed and Confused and Whole Lotta Love on-stage jams. Not many other acts and can still pull off the most ball-breaking "Communication Breakdown" either, thanks to the high pitched screeches of Robert Plant.

Luckily, the Crunge's lead singer, Bronwyn Marie West, is a whole lotta female. "My range has never been this large. My skill has never been pushed this far. And I'm better for it"

Favouring B-Sides, and other accumulated cuts from Physical Graffiti that got left off previous albums, are a focus, as not many other Zep bands seem to focus on rarer and less popular tracks.

"We don't want to do Lemon Song, we'd rather do Custard Pie.... I'd rather not have to sing about my 'lemon', and neither would my brother.." jokes Bronwyn. "We favour Ten Years Gone over perfecting our Stairway too..We can't afford double guitars and organs.. we're young, we'll get there yet".

The Crunge relies on their music rather than costumes, expensive equipment, or on-stage gimmicks. Zeppelin was able to perform without any of these luxuries, and The Crunge can too. "Hell we WANT to work this way. It's raw, it's real, it's the way to go right now. This musical style will indeed follow us into our own music-making processes, when the time comes" says the band's Jimmy Page, Cam West.

To more accurately grasp the effect of The Crunge, one would have to witness their live high-energy, ever-expansive folk to rock ‘n roll show, where a beautiful whisper can easily transgress to roaring thunder. The Crunge distinguishes themselves from other tribute bands through emphasis on emulating Zep's live arrangements, which adapted the band's expansive studio sound into a loud and fast rock n' roll show, while allowing room for the softer, folk-side of Zeppelin. The resulting changes keep things interesting for the audience, whether they are newcomers or veteran Ledheads.

With a catalogue that showcases FM radio classics, choice album cuts, hard-rockers and acoustic numbers, there's a whole lot to love about The Crunge: Led Zeppelin Tribute.
