No Longer Beginners
Indie-rock quartet the cut*off has a new sound and a new album but the same vibe.

Most rock bands start out sounding like their forebears. And for every 200 bands that never find their own styles, there’s one that goes on to create something that feels completely familiar yet still totally new.

The cut*off started out playing noisy garage rock a la The Pixies and Toadies and won over a fair amount of listeners along the way. But after several years together and one CD, The Rorschach EP (Summerbreak Records, 2006), something started to change. The need for more substance, more dynamism, hell, just plain more melody began to creep in. So begins the story of Packaged up for Beginners, the cut*off’s groundbreaking new record.

“We all loved more music than just the stuff we were likened to, especially melodic greats like The Beatles and Neil Young,” said guitarist Jayson Hamilton, who attributes his band’s growth to experience, improvements by frontman and primary songwriter Kyle Barnhill, “and, of course, meeting Salim.”

The “Salim” he’s referring to is Dallas-based singer/songwriter and producer Salim Nourallah. After playing a few Dallas-area shows in support of Nourallah and listening to his solo records, the cut*off and its label (Dallas-based Summerbreak, which signed the band in 2005) both felt like Nourallah’s studio, Pleasantry Lane, might be the right place for the band’s first full length. The cut*off and Nourallah had already become fast friends and Nourallah’s resumé was impressive. In addition to the cut*off, he’s done work for the Damnwells, the Deathray Davies, and both the Old 97’s and their frontman, Rhett Miller.

“I just basically joined the band,” said Nourallah, who added mostly multi-instrumental flourishes. “I felt like a fifth Beatle, and I don’t usually ever feel that way with bands I record. But this was different.” Recording began over the course of a single icy-cold weekend in January of ’07. The cut*off boys, though, left Nourallah’s place a little unsure of what had transpired.

Drummer Jake Webster said, “We felt like [the process] was pretty smooth but didn’t know if our musical ideas meshed with [Nourallah’s] and, more importantly, if it was the right fit for a full album, especially because albums aren’t cheap [to make], y’know?”

But before Webster and company had a chance to really consider any other possibilities, Nourallah handed the band his first rough mixes, complete with ideas for keyboard parts and vocal harmonies. The cut*off’s collective jaw dropped.

“We didn’t know we could sound like that,” recalled Barnhill. “I mean, my songwriting was definitely changing, but we still weren’t exactly sure how that would translate onto tape.”

With a newfound admiration for Nourallah’s talent, the band pledged not only its desire to allow him to helm the new record but also its wish to forge something dramatically different from anything the cut*off had done before.

The newly formed partnership labored over the album piece by piece throughout 2007, taking only one short hiatus, in the early fall, for Nourallah to produce the Old 97’s new album. With Nourallah’s help, the cut*off crafted more than 20 songs, all combining the band’s indie-raw grit with gorgeous ’60s-pop arrangements.

Nourallah “pushed us all but especially me,” said Barnhill sheepishly. “In many respects, he taught me to sing.”

As the recording process wound down, the band began to take stock of all the changes that had come.

“We suddenly realized that we had to go out and play all of this live and make it sound something like what we captured on disc,” said Hamilton. “That’s what’s ahead of us now. That and getting people to hear this thing that we’re very proud of.”

Even after months of listening to Packaged up for Beginners, it’s still hard to believe it comes from the same band that released Rorschach, an unapologetic rocker. Beginners is 11 tracks of pop-rock bliss and could be one of the best releases in Fort Worth-Dallas in a long time.

Initial reaction has been good, based on album sales, a few glowing reviews in local and national media, and a somewhat lucrative East Coast tour that just wrapped up. The band also was among a handful of 817 artists to play SXSW this past spring.

“Things are brewing, and we’re excited,” said Hamilton. “I won’t say anything specific about just what might be coming up, but it feels good having this record in our back pocket now.”

Ft. Worth garage rock wonders The Cut*Off are finally coming home after a couple of months spent touring places far beyond their normal haunts. Out supporting the impressive new effort Packaged Up For Beginners, the Cut*Off headed to Chicago after SXSW and even ventured across the border for the first time. Guitarist Jayson Hamilton took some time before a show in Memphis to pontificate about some of the tour’s more interesting moments...

- The band lost lead singer Kyle Barnhill before even getting out of Austin. Barnhill was eventually discovered at 4 a.m. with members of The Drams just in time to get aboard the van.
- In the Windy City, the guys couldn’t find the apartment a friend had offered them to crash in. They ended up discussing music during a snowstorm with some guy from Texas who went by the name of “Red Rawker.”
- In Toronto, a deejay dedicated Stevie Ray Vauhan’s “Texas Flood” to the boys while some French guy plied them with drinks--only to demand payment moments later. Asked by the bar’s owner to help throw the frog out, the guys gladly complied.
- After being banned from a hotel in Danbury, Conn., because the band members used a window for a door, things only took a turn for the worse in the Big Apple, as the band's van collided with a taxi. The air conditioner was the only casualty, thankfully, and the NYC show went off without a hitch.
- Making their way home, the guys played a "great venue" in Morristown, Tennessee--only to find out that their accommodations consisted of one power strip and an ancient toilet. “It was the best night of sleep we had,” admits Hamilton.

...“and these stories are just the tip of the iceberg,” Hamilton says.
