"Israeli music students in Boston play on, post-attack"

“The attack shook all of us badly,” said Daniel Rotem, a 22-year-old tenor saxophonist and composer. Rotem has represented Israel as a performer in The Hague and Cape Town and in 2010, the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, outside Tel Aviv, voted him its top player.

“We were going to cancel all of our shows for weeks. But the one thing I learned in Israel is to never give up to things like that. Keep pushing forward to achieve your dreams,” said Rotem. On Tuesday, The Daniel Rotem Trio will perform at the Regatta Bar in Cambridge, a top jazz venue.

“I love jazz because it evolves, and it is about listening,” Rotem said. Improvisational performance fills many hours a week for most students, allowing them “to speak and listen to each other through music,” he said. - The Times Of Israel

Bio

Enchanted by jazz as a teenager, tenor saxophonist and composer Daniel Rotem graduated with honors from Israel’s Thelma Yellin High School Jazz Program in 2008. During 2009 – 2010 Daniel studied at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music in Tel Aviv, where he was awarded first place in Rimon’s Outstanding Jazz Player Competition and had an opportunity to perform with saxophonist David Liebman. He represented Rimon at the 20th IASJ meeting in The Hague, following earlier performances at the IAJE Conference in Toronto and the SAJE in Cape Town.
Considering music a force connecting people and cultures Daniel made international exposure a priority early on and participated twice in the Siena Jazz Workshops in Italy. He had the opportunity to play and study with Lionel Loueke, George Garzone, Scott Colley, John Taylor, Michael Blake, Kenny Werner, Peter Bernstein, Eric Harland, Joel Frahm and Jeremy Pelt. Daniel is currently studying at the Berklee College of Music towards a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance and Composition on a full tuition scholarship. He has performed at different venues around Boston, including at a joint performance of India Arie and Idan Raichel, and with drummer Peter Erskine, and has studied and played with Bill Pierce, Hal Crook, Greg Hopkins, George Garzone, Dave Santoro, Jim Odgren, Ed Tomassi, Tiger Okoshi, Alain Mallet, Shannon Le Claire, Terri Lyne Carrington and Javier Limon.
Daniel and his group recorded one of his original compositions -“Hill Workout”- for Berklee’s Jazz Revelation release “Ripple Effect” and are currently working on their debut album. In addition Daniel serves as a student ambassador representing Berklee.

For the past year Daniel has been leading a trio performing his original compositions. In April 2013 the trio performed at the Regattabar as part of International Jazz Day. Wishing to help create opportunities for other aspiring students, Daniel chose to donate all proceeds from the concert to the Berklee Scholarship Fund. Other notable performances with the trio include the Berklee International Folk Festival, a live-broadcast show at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, and performances for NPR’s “The Checkout” masterclasses with saxophonists Dayna Stephens and Walter Smith III.
