the Dardanelles

BandRockPop

The Dardanelles are a band based on substance and melody. A penchant for hooks is complimented by the band's relentless energy and rock foundation. Fronted by Cathal Geary, winner of the Murphy's UnCorked Singer Songwriter competition, they possess a singer whose voice has won over many hearts.

Biography

Since their birth in the summer of 2004, Cork band the Dardanelles have been quietly gathering a loyal fan base in their home city. The release of their debut e.p. “Coming Up For Air” in June of 2006 saw the group impress the Cork faithful and press alike with Don O’ Mahony of the Evening Echo raving:

"possessess the soaring energy and endearing naiveté of early U2.….a relentlessly chugging thing powered by a great motor”.

Fronted by Cathal Geary (winner of the Murphy's UnCorked Singer Songwriter
Competition), the band's dynamics are far from limited with Kevin Waugh alternating between guitar and keyboards, David Cooney on bass and Ronan Cooney on drums. Shifting from edgy rock to whispering melodic slow songs is effortless to this band and always ensures a rich tapestry of sound.

Support slots with the likes of Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, the Hothouse Flowers, Julie Feeney and Autamata have done little to harm this quartet’s arrival to the Irish music scene. Live favourites 'The Best of Emily Dickinson', '1,000 Lights' and 'Murder Me' exhibit both the song scope of the Dardanelles and their exuberating live performance.

The Best Of Emily Dickinson

Written By: Cathal Geary

Now girls use boys for sex.
Honey admits that she’s feeling the pinch of it.
I’m not sure of it yet.
I want Emily Dickinson show me the best of her skin.

Flat foot paces the steps.
His lover fled, ya she just swing like a pendulum.
Life weighs hard on a chest
That opens its treasures to those who are keen to forget.

Everyday it gets more and more likely
That we are the page boys in this alter of light.
We’re thrown in deep and now we are finding
That we are the punch line and we’ve been delivered on time.

Winter soon forgives
Widows in wilderness married in loneliness.
We all soon submit
To something we never did, some things are hard to admit.
And this is the light we falter in.
Fight each hollering wind.

Everyday it gets more and more likely
That we are the page boys in this alter of light.
We’re thrown in deep and now we are finding
That we are the punch line and we’ve been delivered on time.

Murder Me

Written By: Cathal Geary

I need to find a space so I can align these feelings I have for you.
Murder me, it’s a promise you claimed you’d keep so outspokenly.
How do you feel now your cards have been dealt so openly?

Well it’s a sorrow that just eats out of your hand.
It’s the feeling that won’t let you understand.

You could wash me clean cos
you’ve seen and walked through me like I failed to do.
Hang me out to dry so I don’t doubt my own mistakes.
How can I fall from such a height without a single trace?

Well it’s a sorrow that just eats out of your hand.
It’s the feeling that won’t let you understand.
Well it’s a sorrow that just eats out of your hand.
It’s the feeling that won’t let you understand.

Friends Know Better

Written By: Cathal Geary

A night - time journey to the island of light,
It showed me you, in sober light.
And I saw you, you were laid on the bed,
Calling me, with a smile you said
“If time can change then so can friends,
And if we break, then we can mend”.

But friends know better,
To fall in love then disappear, why do you cave in?
To feelings you harbour,
We lose ourselves trying to find a better way to say this.

I gather feelings like falling leaves,
And put them back onto their own tree.
And I move on with a smiling face.
I know you now more than yesterday.
Those who change for love will learn
Time is a teacher to know her.

‘Cos friends know better,
To fall in love then disappear, why do I cave in?
To feelings I harbour,
We lose ourselves trying to find a better way to play this.
Friends know better,
To fall in love then disappear, why do you cave in?
To feelings you harbour,
We lose ourselves trying to find a better way to say this.
