Low Winter Sun - EP

Introducing The Dark Jokes, a band with brooding sounds, bold words and big ideas.

The Edinburgh based four-piece release their self produced 3-track debut E.P, Low Winter Sun on February 4th. Created in the studio they built with their own hands, the record is a testament to the bands DIY attitude and showcases all of the tools in their arsenal.

“It’s a small yet potent dose of homebrewed rock n’ roll ”. - Aaron Dennington.

The video for the title track, Low Winter Sun was shot by innovative director Jack King and features a cameo performance from Neil Leiper, who starred in Ken Loach’s recent film The Angel’s Share.

So far the Low Winter Sun E.P has received critical acclaim and airplay on BBC Reporting Scotland, BBC Introducing with Ally McCrae and on Jim Gellatly’s Amazing Radio show.

Built around the spine of the Dennington brothers, The Dark Jokes are, Aaron up front orchestrating affairs and Paul on drums providing bewitching foundations. Joining the brothers are, Jamie Hogg on bass and instrument juggling cellist and keyboard player Matthew Thornton.

Using a rich pallet of sounds, the colourful 4-piece paint a distinctive picture in both the studio and at their live shows. A growling rhythm section of trigger-happy drums and rolling bass underpin dark melodic guitar arrangements. Lamenting cello and expertly tinkled piano are added to the fearsome equation to create a thundering wall of sound perfectly suited to the menacing, well-crafted songs of front man Aaron Dennington.

Since their recent formation the group have played a string of successful gigs and festivals around the UK and Ireland including, Electric Picnic, Eden Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival.

A tour of the UK, Europe and South America is booked for 2013, which will see the act perform at the 17th Cultura Inglesa Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which played host to Franz Ferdinand and The Horrors in 2012.

With their debut release out on February 4th, an album currently in production and an extensive tour to follow, the future looks bright for The Dark Jokes.
