Song of the week #5 - Morphine by The Dark Woods

The Dark Woods, the four piece alternative/rock/funk band from Perth, has recently released their debut album.

Their album contains 4 tracks and from the moment I heard ‘Morphine’, I was amazed, from the quality of the musicians, and the overall quality of the recording itself. ‘Morphine’ was one of these songs that from the start had me smiling and ‘bopping’ along to that bass line. The Dark Woods list of influences is massive, spanning from artists such as Weezer and Tom Waits yet their influence can still be seen throughout the song by their use of dynamics and creativity with their music.

It’s great to see a local band doing their own thing and putting such creativity into their music and I really do hope to see more of The Dark Woods really soon.

Bio

The Dark Woods are a funk/rock/alternative 4-piece band hailing from Perth, Western Australia.

The story is familiar; a mutual love of music in its various forms and an almost carnal desire to play brought the members of The Dark Woods together. Drawing unashamedly from their influences and experiences the band writes, records and performs together as if doing so for years… which is actually the case for all members as they have known one another and played together in bands at various stages in the past. This is not about the past though it is about right now.

Owen Hughes, Brent Manuel, Rod Flynn and drummer Rodney Goodrick – yeah there’s two Rodney’s imagine that – formed The Dark Woods in 2010 and released their debut EP on October 28th 2011 at The Velvet Lounge (Flying Scotsman) in Perth, Western Australia.

After several months of gigging in 2010 at some of Perth’s most acclaimed venues including the Amplifier Bar and The Rosemount Hotel The Dark Woods set about recording their debut self-titled EP. After a most excellent recording session at Revolver Studios in Perth and an incredible mastering session with Don Bartley at Benchmark Mastering Studios in Sydney the band are ready to continue forward.

Producing an eclectic sound with an importance placed on bass and guitar syncopation that is held together by solid drumming, it is the bands intent to tell their musical story by means other than simply relying on vocal lines. The Dark Woods have been described by some as like R.E.M. meets Foo Fighters with alternative funk tendencies.

“The Dark Woods held their CD launch at the Velvet Lounge (Perth) and I was truly amazed by the bass player in the band… if you get to see them live it’s even more funky.” - Ross Chisholm – RTR FM 92.1

We are happy to talk more but really it’s about the music so if you’re ready, enter if you will, The Dark Woods…
