On April 4th 2007, two years before The Day's Weight formed, Pat McDermott sat in at a tribute show for John Stewart (The Kingston Trio) at Club Passim in Boston. Pat joined his father Chuck McDermott, who toured with Stewart for over a decade, to play and honor a lost legend and mentor. At that moment, a spark seemed to ignite, illuminating a new musical path for Pat from John Stewart and Chuck McDermott.
The Day's Weight truly took shape when they played their first show at the Middle East in Boston. A multigenerational formation of the band, which included John Stewart's drummer for many years, Dennis Kenmore (Goose Creek Symphony) played a charged set to a hyped, enthusiastic, sold-out crowd. The Day's Weight had come full circle from Patrick's fateful night at Passim, to an inspired performance in the old stomping ground of John Stewart and Chuck McDermott.
Throughout the next year, The Day’s Weight debut EP came through in a very unique situation. Six musicians, a number whom had never met, were brought together to record six songs in a rural Vermont home. The record was a number of years in the making, but took shape in only a matter of days, as the Vermont winter turned to spring. Producer Jamie Bright, who is also the bands bass player, made a point to create a heavily collaborative atmosphere as the band crafted their sound on the spot. After the tracking, the band took their music to Paul Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies, Uncle Tupelo) at Camp Street Studio's in Cambridge, MA. The record really came together in the very capable hands of the touted producer and his crew. From there, the EP was mastered by another Boston musical icon, Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering (Arcade Fire, Wilco, Andrew Bird). The Day's Weight Debut EP is set to release on July 18th, 2010 and represents a snapshot in a time of a band growing by the day.
After being immersed in the eclectic music scene of Vermont and the classic rock nature of Boston, The Day's Weight is poised to deliver their haunting Americana rock flavor as they begin to tour heavily throughout the US in the fall of 2010 and beyond.
