The Deaf - (Think new The Hives) with their debut album Toot Whistle Plunk Boom!
Hailing from The Hague, a region of Holland known for its garage rock scene in the 1960s, The Deaf is a spanking-new band that embodies the spirit of '60s garage rock. The Deaf have been compared to The Hives and The Cramps, and they've opened up for The Arctic Monkeys. But the main thing you need to know about these guys is that they're damn pretty awseomely good.
Lead vocals in this indie rock quartet are shared by Spike van Zoest, who also does guitar and plays the famous Dutch rock band, Di-rect, and Miss Fuzz, a superwoman bassist who might just have the coolest stage name ever.
These guys aren't too big outside of the Netherlands just yet, although this is changing. In both 2010 and 2011, The Deaf played South by Southwest, the festival responsible for catapulting the likes of the White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to indie rock famedom.
More important cutting their indie rock chops at SXSW 2011, The Deaf puts on a killer live show, complete with mod-style suits and mop-tops. (check them out performing “I'm Alive” below.) While '60s-inspired throwback acts have been rather played out in recent years, we think you'll agree that The Deaf stand out from the herd.
The Deaf's debut album, Toot Whistle Plunk Boom, was released earlier this year and is definitely worth checking out.
Some stand-out tracks on the album include “I'm Alive,” “He's My Man,” and “Coming Down That Road.” (Check em out below). Miss Fuzz and the boys are currently promoting the album touring the Netherlands.

Muzikaal gezien zijn veel Nederlandse bands schatplichtig aan de reeds veelvuldig gedocumenteerde Haagse beatscene uit de jaren zestig. De nieuwe band van Di-Rect-gitarist Spike van Zoest heet The Deaf en zet die Haagse traditie voort.
Voor een deel althans, want het nieuwe vehikel van de gitarist verwerkt behalve nederbeat van bands als Q65, Shocking Blue, The Motions en het Drentse Cuby + Blizzards ook invloeden van blues, punk en hardrock in zijn muziek. Met name Britse bands als The Who en Kinks hebben hun sporen nagelaten.
The Deaf opent het debuutalbum Toot Whistle Plunk Boom! met het nummer 1973. In dat bewuste jaar waren veel van eerste lading nederbeatbands (waaronder de bovengenoemde) reeds over hun commericële en creatieve piek heen of zelfs al uit elkaar.
Het Farfisa-orgeltje is op vrijwel ieder nummer prominent aanwezig, maar The Deaf klinkt minder retro dan The Madd uit Rotterdam of het Limburgse DeWolff. Dat The Deaf echter een stuk toegankelijker klinkt, is logisch gezien de geschiedenis van Van Zoest met Di-Rect.
Bruisend
Vurige liedjes, een bruisende productie en de verbluffende muzikale capaciteiten van de Hagenezen maken Toot Whistle Plunk Boom! tot één van de betere Nederlandse debuutalbums van de laatste jaren.
Het enige minpunt is de zang van Van Zoest, die een hoop effecten nodig heeft om acceptabel te klinken. Dat terwijl bassiste Janneke Nijhuis een veel betere vocaliste blijkt. Maar omdat het lang geleden is dat een Haagse band echte rock-‘n’-roll maakte, rekenen we dat The Deaf niet te zwaar aan.

Artrocker Awards Nominees choose their LP Of The Year: The Computers choose The Deaf
It's the Artrocker Awards this Friday, and to celebrate we're asking our nominees to nominate THEIR albums of the year!
The Computers"Toot Whistle Plunk Boom! by The Deaf is brilliant. Loads of down-stroking, hard-hitting garage pop songs. They're from the Netherlands and they've got a great style, not least 'cause of their female backing singer who also plays the organ, which really adds a touch of soul class to the record.
Just when you think you've got it sussed, 'Long Way Down' is a mid- paced anthemic slice of a song and reminds me of early Manic Street Preachers! It's got even more to offer, with raucous harmonica-soaked blues songs and twisting rock n roll. A great album for any mod, rocker, groover, shaker, punk, greaser, lover or hater. That's why its my favourite album of 2011."

The Deaf
The Deaf is a high energy garage-rock band from The Netherlands. The band dug up the remainders of the early 60's beat music and mixed it up with an overdose of garage, punk and rock&roll which they themselves describe as Speed Beat. The stage suits them well: a live performance of The Deaf can be compared to a loud explosion of uncontrollable energy.
The Hague, Dutch hometown of The Deaf, has always had the label Beat City of Holland because of her 60's roots with legendary garage bands like the Golden Earrings, Shocking Blue and Q65. For the last 45 years there was not much beat music going on in The Hague. In 2007 three musicians Spike v Zoest (Vox & vox guitar), Miss Fuzz (Vox & vox bass) and Kit Carrera (Drums) decided that it was about time to change that fact and formed The Deaf.
Since then,The Deaf has played a shocking amount of shows through out The Netherlands, Belgium and SXSW 2010 (Austin, Texas).
Later that year, they teamed up with organist Midnight Mau (Farfisa organ) and the four of them decided to raise an independent record label: Speed Beat Records.
Shortly after, the band recorded and produced their first full length album "Toot Whistle Plunk Boom!" (mixed by Pelle Gunnerfeldt - producer & mixer of a.o.The Hives).
Toot Whistle Plunk Boom! was released in April 2011 on vinyl and CD and got excellent critics. Due to the great response on the album combined with a strong live reputation, The Deaf succesfully played 2 Dutch clubtours and 2 impressive festivaltours including spots on festivals like Parkpop (biggest free open air festival of Europe), Lowlands, Zwarte Cross, a clubshow in Moscow and again SXSW 2011. Clem Burke (Blondie) saw the Deaf rock on SXSW and his verdict was: “Awesome band! He’s a combination of Pelle Almqvist (the Hives), Wilco Johnson (Dr. Feelgood) and Pete Townsend (the Who).. All rolled into one.”
After finishing their latest clubtour in November 2012, Spike, Kit, Miss Fuzz and Midnight Mau decided to focus on writing new songmaterial, aiming for a new record to be released this year.
