"The Deep Fried 5 @ The 5 Spot for Next Big Nashville"

The Deep Fried 5 were still celebrating the self released CD, Saturday Night Funk, Sunday Morning Soul, hitting the stage with six guys. The greatest thing about their retro 70’s-80’s funk style is that they are not a sampled artifact but have Dylan Stansberry beating the hell out of three Congas, Justin Martin on a Yamaha DX7, can we say Ready for the World?

Eric Koslosky alternating between Ernie Isley style lead guitar and vocals that would fit as an opener for Santana or Bell Biv Devoe for that matter. Andrew Muller kept the staccato single funk guitar lines letting Eric soar on the breaks and occasional lead roles.

This style of music demands a strong Bass interaction since many of the bands from that era were known for their strong players like Bootsy Collins or Larry Graham. Alex Dilley felt comfortable being in that role which is a lot more demanding than traditional Rock. The Bass player is the lead guitarist.

Taking us through “Soul Food” they even did a “Soul Sacrifice” break with Congas and kit going through a quick jam that could have been a great longer break with some soloing on top. The Deep Fried 5 are doing a great archivist gig that would be comfortable on Brooklyn’s Daptone label.

"The Road to Bonarroo @ Mercy Lounge 5-17-2010"

Deep Fried Five, a band we had never heard of before, ended up playing the dreaded final slot. But that didn’t stop them from placing third. The bill was well-stacked genre-wise, we hope that they made some new fans that night, because, honestly, our notes got a little wet around here and the only thing legible is “can’t think of synonyms for ‘funky fresh.’” -The Nashville Scene - The Nashville Scene

"The Deep Fried 5 Record Release Party"

Forgive us, dear readers, for this most transgressive of transgressions: Somehow we missed the delicious nugget of battered funk known as the Deep Fried 5. Usually we can be counted on to be abreast of the latest and greatest in our hometown funk sound — it doesn't take much — but somehow this six-piece managed to fly under our radar. But no more! These dudes have moved to the top of the chart in our heart with a sound finds the more commercial aspects of late-’70s soul — you know, when it was bumping uglies with the beast that was about to become disco. Deep Fried 5 celebrate the release of their debut album Saturday Night Funk, Sunday Morning Soul with the always awesome Biscuits N Gravy and the notorious DJ Doctor Wicklestein.

"RIM students lead Deep Fried Funk Night"

Psychedelic vibes, groovy tunes and funky beats were radiating the sound proof walls of the Walnut House Friday night for the Deep Fried Funk Night that RIM students of Rich Barnet’s advanced concert touring promotion class put on.

Getting down and getting funky for this concert was easy to do once stepping foot into the rosewood floored reception room, which was lit up with multi-colored disco lights in every direction.

“It felt like we were put in a time machine and taken back 40 years,” says Jason Huber, junior RIM major and guitarist of the local psychedelic folk band, the Boroughs.

DJ Kidsmeal of WorkForce Rebellion headed off the show, spinning original psychedelic hip-hop tracks with a funky twist, some of which were from his newest album, “Secret Recipe.” He constructed soul and funk to mix with his classic psychedelic hip-hop and unique turntable style. He was successful in bringing out the right sound and vibe to the audience. At times it was truly funky and at others very jazz-inspired and soulfully melodic.

The Deep Fried Five, a fusion of ‘60s soul, ‘70s funk and modern jam, took the reigns a little before midnight, coming out with high energy and excitement. Now that DJ Kidsmeal got everyone feeling groovy, The Deep Fried Five immediately went into an upbeat funk tempo and kept the energy alive with their climatic jam, feel good lyrics and hypnotizing soulful grooves.

“Every time I see Deep Fried they put on a great show, so I was loving every minute of it,” says Hutch Crowley, senior RIM major and bass player of local instrumental group, Deep Machine.

Well into Deep Fried’s set DJ Kidsmeal came back onstage to collaborate with the grooving funk quintet. The two, who have played together on several occasions, blended their unique sounds and complemented each other perfectly on stage. The audience, filled with MTSU students, was captivated by this dynamic duo resonating deep funky beats, smooth guitar rhythms, groovy bass lines, and an energetic organ that put you back in 1974.

“I’ve never heard a funk group like The Deep Fried Five collaborate with a DJ before, and they really sounded great together,” says Jayme Kolling, junior concrete industry management major.

Although the show did not sell out, the turnout was impressive. Those who came to the show put on by RIM students were funktastically dressed to impress and were not only dressing the part but playing it too. Getting down and getting funky was an understatement for this crowd as they danced the night away and into the wee hours of the morning.
