Concert review: The Demigods at Bill’s Records and Tapes (August 28)

by Brenna Rushing

This spiritual band is breaking out in the DFW scene and is ready for your attention.

Bill’s Records and Tapes, a small record store filled with thousands of vinyls and covered in band memorabilia, would not jump out as the perfect venue for a concert. But for Dallas locals the Demigods, it did more than suffice. Bill hosted a show for their first self-titled EP on Saturday.

The girl on the left was not there, but this is the rest of the band!

The band consists of two siblings, Jamie and Josh Reeves, and keyboardist Cheryl Anderson. Their sound is reminiscent of the '70s with some darkness sprinkled in. Cheryl, aka Delphi, and Jamie both sing and play instruments. Their pitches play well off of each other.

Although a majority of the audience were friends of the band or regulars at Bill’s, it was a friendly crowd eager for music.

Delphi announced that “Moonbat Twist,” from the EP, was played on 91.7 FM (KXT) the day before the release party. This track is set apart from their otherwise-reoccurring sound; it’s much peppier and even younger. Hopefully it will get more airtime.

The Demigods' entire first album, Roses for (IV) Revolution, will be out later this fall.

Every so often, a band comes along that challenges the accepted paradigms of lyric, style, and image. The Demigods is just such a band. Take the Patti Smith, Leonard Cohen-style songwriting of solo artist Delphi (Cheryl Anderson), add Jamie Reeves’ arching vocals and intricate lyrics reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Stevie Nicks, throw in crunchy guitars, piano, synths, and drive it all with a booming recreation of John Bonham’s very own drum kit—and you have a genre-defying rock experience that truly stands apart from the current musical consciousness.

The Demigods formed in late 2009 when singer-songwriter Delphi began playing with drummer Josh Reeves, who was also playing shows with his sister, singer-songwriter Jamie Reeves. After one show in which they combined their sets, alternating between Delphi and Jamie Reeves’ songs, it became clear that the true band was one which showcased both female artists. In its short life, the band has already garnered a considerable buzz, drawing a diverse crowd of fans attracted to the lyrics, beat, and soul of the music.

The band is unique in that each of its members is involved in individual projects to further the expansion of knowledge, enlightenment, and information in many different forms. Drummer Josh Reeves has played in bands for over 16 years and hosts a radio show and has produced two full-length documentary films on esoteric knowledge and political investigation for the past three years, and now owns his own network at www.TheGlobalReality.com. Songwriter Jamie Reeves has been playing music and singing at local Texas Oprys since the age of 8, and released her first full-length album, 2038: A Message Through Time in 2010. And pianist and songwriter Cheryl Anderson, who graduated from the University of North Texas with a degree in Literature in 2005, has published poetry, short stories, and recorded and produced her first 3 albums as Delphi since that time.

Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The wisdom of this mathematician and philosopher certainly applies to The Demigods. Even the name, taken for the half-human children of the Greek Pantheon, implies transcendence beyond the norm. The response to The Demigods has been overwhelming, drawing crowds from the conscious hip hop scene, to the indie rock scene, to just fans who love to rock. This sort of magic is only set to continue as The Demigods build their reputation as a distinctive, intelligent band of dedicated individuals.
