"Reasons to be Cheerful"

THE DENTS: “Better Off” (Track #3 from the disc “Time For Biting”). Having lived and breathed 30 years, punk rock can encompass a lotta things, and this track from a half female/half male Boston quartet (no, they aren't hermaphrodites, wise-ass) is the whole kit n' kaboodle mashed down into the most compelling track of the year.

"Unhyphenated Rock and Roll"

The Dents’ debut, Time for Biting, doesn’t disappoint: the disc dishes out a half-hour of loud and hooky punk rock, leaving what appear to be ex-boyfriends squirming in its wake.
- Brett Milano - Boston Phoenix

"The Dents are Ready to Strike"

From the overdriven guitars and raucous solos, vocals verging on screaming or growling, depending on the anger level, to the rhythm section's fast, solid beats, this is music to move to-maybe not to dance so much as to flail with fists and feet, but move nonetheless. "Time For Biting" works on every level.
- Keith Demanche - The Wire, Portsmouth, NH

"The Dents at Spaceland"

I fell in love with these punk-pop traditionalists on first sight in 2004,
and the ardor hasn¹t cooled a degree since. Boston-based with the requisite pedigree (one former Real Kid, a former Freeze and a present member of the Little Stevenapproved Downbeat 5), the mixed-gender quartet love to drive home a compact song at Ramones/X speed, and they¹ve got at least a dozen worth hearing repeatedly. The Dents are the antithesis of "Hot Topic punk," one of the few extant outfits capable of refuting the notion that "30 years is long enough for this shit." It¹s free, it¹s near -- >go!
- Johnny Angel - Los Angeles Weekly

"Re-Igniting the Rock"

The Dents bring it on back to where it began; nary a song in their set is minus melody and hook and they're wonderfully relentless in that straight-ahead speed surf rhythm thing. I couldn't stop smiling-and these days, it's more like can't stop wincing. They're that good...
...The songs range from good to great (their classic "Better Off" has been expounded upon at length in a previous column and they have a new drummer I've neither seen nor heard), they're tight when they gotta be, loose when appropriate and best of all, gloriously unadorned with gimmickery. They is what they is and as someone that's seen every circus rolled out in front of his exhausted eyes for thirty plus years, this version of "less is more" is an oasis.
Their LA debut is the 23rd at Spaceland. It's free. So are you, it's America. You loathe punk rock for what it's become, I don't blame you-see the Dents and reverse the curse.
- Johnny Angel - Los Angeles Alternative Press

"The Dents"

The band turned to the legendary David Minehan of The Neighborhoods to do the production [for Time for Biting]...Those who have seen The Dents in concert know what a gargantuan task that is, but Minehan and the band, who were hardly passive wallflowers during the recording process, pulled it off with nary a misstep. The result is all hooks and attitude, a perfect mélange of The Ramones, Blondie, CBGB’s and the still lamented Rat. It’s got some sting, but you can sure sing along to it in the car.

Bio

The Dents were a Boston punk rock band formed in late 2002/early 2003. After releasing Round One, a split CD/7 EP, with Bostons The Street Dogs, the band toured regionally and played some west coast dates, including a live appearance on Dicky Barrett's "Mighty Mighty Morning Show" on Indie 103 in LA and the BYO Punk Rock Bowling Festival in Las Vegas. Their full-length CD, Time for Biting, was produced by Boston legend Sir David Minehan (The Neighborhoods, Paul Westerberg). Upon its release, Time for Biting was nominated for a Boston Music Award for Debut Album of the Year, landed the band on the front page of the Boston Phoenix and made several local critics' Top Ten lists for that year.

Bassist/lead vocalist Michelle Paulhus, rhythm guitarist/lead vocalist Jen D'Angora, lead guitarist Craig Adams and drummer Kevin Pickering will be reuniting for a gig at TT the Bear's Place on November 18, about three years after their last live show at the Abbey Lounge. Eric Salt and The Electric City, Devil on Horseback and Muck and the Mires will also be on the bill.

Paulhus currently plays with the Andrea Gillis Band and The Other Girls, but has also been a member of The Marvels, The Street Dogs, The Real Kids and The Decals. Jen D'Angora is currently in Jenny Dee and the Deelinquents and The Downbeat 5, but has also been a member of The Other Girls. Craig Adams currently plays with Bipolar Coaster, but has also been a member of Beefy DC, Trouser (with Theo Epstein) and The Freeze.
