"The eSession Experience: Online Recording for All"

(Article on the recording of "Nowhere Motel" using the web-based "virtual recording studio" esession.com.)

"I was in a New York hotel room, working on a new song. Because it was a New York hotel room, I had barely enough space to open my laptop without hurting myself. Luckily, that was all I needed to begin using eSession.com, a new "virtual recording studio" founded by engineer, songwriter, and Pro Tools guru Gina Fant-Saez.

Gina, as it happened, was on the phone from her studio in the Texas hill country outside Austin. She had invited me to give eSession a try...

...The site supports not only recording, but the entire music-production process, with a design that is among the most complete and best integrated I've seen.

I got a chance to learn about that design very thoroughly by beginning as a newbie and working my way through a full production. I chose to record "Nowhere Motel," a song I wrote with my brother Owen. It's the title track for a project I'm producing for my band the Desert Mothers..." - O'Reilly Digital Media

Bio

The Desert Mothers were founded during a long run in the twilight near Joshua Tree, California by songwriter/producer Spencer Critchley. As coyotes sang in the shadow of a distant mesa, a white dog appeared from nowhere to run alongside, and soon the first Desert Mothers album, Nowhere Motel, had begun to take shape.

A founding member of the long lost Bermudian-Canadian rock band Aceboy, but now living in Monterey, California, Spencer has written and produced music for the Emmy-winning documentary “Blink”, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Prime Time, The Entertainers, Radio Banned, the Peabody Award-winning Paris From Wilde to Morrison) and many others. When not making music, Spencer is a multimedia producer (projects for David Bowie, Santana, Moby and others) and consultant who lately spends most of his time advising Democratic political candidates on communications strategies.
Spencer is the founder of The Desert Mothers. Joining him on “Nowhere Motel”:

Gina Fant-Saez (singer)
When she isn’t singing, Gina is the owner of and engineer at Blue World Studios in Austin, Texas. She has worked with U2, Jimmie Vaughan, Sting, Shawn Colvin, Soul Asylum, Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails, Tweaker) and many others, and is the founder of the web-based “virtual recording studio” esession.com.

Bruce Kaphan (steel guitar, dobro)
As evidenced by his album Slider, Bruce takes steel and slide guitar places they’ve never been before. He’s played with David Byrne, Sheyl Crow, American Music Club, the Red House Painters and many others. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Byron House (bass)
Byron, aside from being a pioneering electro-acoustic composer and a very cool guy, is one of Nashville’s busiest bass players. He has worked with Emmylou Harris, the Dixie Chicks, Dolly Parton, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Jorma Kaukonen and many others. He produced “Loaded”, the latest album by the Waybacks (Compass Records).

Tom Roady (percussion)
Also based in Nashville, Tom has worked with way too many people. Some of our favorites: Mary Chapin Carpenter, the Dixie Chicks, Ricky Skaggs, Trisha Yearwood, Rhonda Vincent, Pops & Mavis Staples, Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge.

Pat Mastelotto (drums)
A founding member of Mr. Mister, Austin-based Pat has also played with XTC, David Sylvian, King Crimson, Jude Cole and many others. He says his inspiration is "the two R's - Radio & Ringo”. Pat is a great drummer. He loves Ringo. This settles it: Ringo is a great drummer.

Gene Rabbai (piano)
A busy Nashville-based player and arranger, Gene has made good music even better while working with Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and lots of others. Sometimes he takes off to Brazil.
