Download: The Difference Engine – Elephant Island
With a band name based on either a William Gibson steampunk novel or an early mathematical calculator and songs inspired by Ernest Shackleton, the Difference Engine are a different breed of Irish band. You can tell this from the opening horns of new single ‘Elephant Island’. It’s an accessible pop song (despite the lyrics of Antarctic expedition) with a wonderful hook, and marks the band out as an Irish Hoosiers or Scouting for Girls. Only much cleverer and less obnoxious. The video is pretty damn good too. - I swar I'm Not Paul
If Martin quietly wooed punters over the threshold, The Difference Engine were an altogether different proposition. They grabbed you by the throat and dragged you in the door. Songs like Gin Wars and Aspirin (about WOMEN and BOOZE naturally) were as strong as Canavan’s on stage presence and he was ably backed by a kentic suited-and-booted Difference Engine. The addition of trumpet lifted even the lulls and made them sound like a Mariachi band at a bull-fight. The horns and suits routine did wonders for Mark Ronson’s career so expect Canavan to be dueting with Lily Allen by the weekend. - HotPress
