"The Djangophiles/Willamette week"

The Djangophiles
[Gypsy jazz] The Djangophiles pay homage to-you guessed it-Django Reinhardt. And like the Euro-jazz pioneer, they keep their brand of Gypsy jazz strictly acoustic. The double-bass beats a mellow up and down while the two guitars pick out the melody: the violin mostly hangs back but occasionally intervenes , crosscutting songs with folfy hints of Eastern Europe.
This is a group of adept musicians- who play Vino Paradiso weekly, by the way- doing their idol justice. One of the many bands trying to emulate Reinhardt , The Djangophiles do what they do very well...

"String swing event"

Having made strong appearances at Djangofest Northwest, and at the String Swing event at the Portland Lindy Exchange Swing Festival, the Djangophiles have demonstrated their ability to please the listening audience as well as the dancers that come to their performances.

The Djangophiles, named after the love of Django Reinhardt, are a Gypsy Jazz group that primarily consists of Dave Stassens (guitar), Jon Thor Williams (guitar), and Dave Speranza (bass). In the live recordings below you’ll also hear Paul Evans on melodica and saprano sax.

As you can hear, the group truly captures the Parisian sound that was innovated by Django Reinhardt during the Swing Era.

"Old town review"

"Parisian Swing/Gypsy Jazz" says the card. Hire these people for your next glam party, but only if you want to be the host that everyone thinks of as the too-cool-for-school hep-cat, with enviably remarkable taste in music.

Brilliant acoustic jazz. Totally tight. I wanted to take them home with me.

If there'd been room to break out into a triple-step with a Flying Texas Tommy, I woulda done.

Bio

Our main influence is our namesake...the great Belgian/French Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt.

Django Reinhardt has astounded and thrilled numerous generations of guitar players and jazz lovers with his amazing command of the guitar. Together with Stephane Grappeli they formed the famous “Hot club of France” in 1934 , and based on the Gypsy jazz guitar stylings of Django , a whole new style of Jazz was developed….called Le jazz hot .

This music has an infectious driving rhythm and incorporates most of the standard pop and jazz tunes of the 20's ,30’s ,40’s , and 50’s as well as modern day compositions.

The Djangophiles , in keeping with the tradition of the music use only acoustic instruments ,and use sound reinforcement only when absolutely necessary. The result is a comfortable listening level that is NEVER too loud or intrusive. And we have the ability to set up in limited space .
