"Competition Win Was No Mix-Up"

After performing together for just eight weeks, a group of musicians from Southern Cross University has gone on to beat more than 300 bands to win the National Campus Band Competition.

The eight-piece band The Downstairs Mix-Up is comprised of current students or graduates of the Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree.

Lead singer Harry Nichols said the band was now looking forward to getting into the studio to record their debut EP, which they hope will be released before Christmas, after receiving $2,000 in studio recording time at Sony. The band also won $5,000 in cash and has already been booked for a number of live gigs.

The National Band Competition is the largest band competition in the southern hemisphere and has been credited for helping launch bands such as Eskimo Joe, The Vasco Era and Jebediah.

This is a great opportunity to get a leg-up in the industry. We had the opportunity to play in front of Triple J¿s Jay and The Doctor, Harry said.

¿We managed to make a lot of industry contacts. It¿s really exciting for us. Now we really want to keep the momentum going. We performed at the Uni in Lismore on October 8 and now we¿re going into the studio to record.

Combining the styles of rock and blues with some funk and pop, the band won the national competition performing all original songs.

The competition was really tough. There were around 300 bands entered in the competition. We had to win our heat here in Lismore against 18 other bands and then we performed in Brisbane before heading to the national final at Seaworld to perform against five other state winners,¿ Harry said.

We worked really hard and did hours and hours of rehearsing in the university facilities. We all play together in the course and are all really good friends. We gel really well together and have had a lot of support from our Uni.

The band members who range in age from their early 20s to mid-30s are: Harry Nichols - lead vocals, guitar; Shay Cater - drums; Luke Davies - bass; Mark Hoare - lead guitar; Jimmy T - keys; Owen Hogan - saxophone; Sarah Grant - vocals; and Emma Davison - vocals. - Discover SCU

"Tatts Mix It Up Out Back"

The Tatts Back Room had it's relaunch on Thursday night and kicked it off with the high energy antics of the Downstairs Mix-Up. If you have been following this blog you already know how great these guys are, and even though they were missing Owen on sax they still managed to get the place funking and groovin'. - NATSKY

"Mixing it up at the Bowlo!"

Dynamic, energetic, tight, funky, mad, awesome, talented, fun...all words that come to mind when thinking about last night's gig at the Lismore Bowlo.

The Downstairs Mix-Up Band had us all grooving in our seats as they delivered their brand of music, loud and full of life. After the photo shoot I did with them late last year, I was eager to see them live. Was curious to see whether the crazy antics at the shoot would continue to their live show...and they didn't disappoint.

They are playing just about everywhere at the moment, so if you missed last night, find them playing somewhere soon and go and have a dose of musical fun. - NATSKY

"Got it Covered!"

Late last year did a mad photo shoot with the Downstairs Mix-Up Band who won the 2009 National Uni Campus band comp. They are gigging everywhere at the moment and getting ready to embark on their EP Launch Tour.

Didn't expect musos who had played the night before to arrive on time at 9am Sunday morning...but they did. These guys were up for anything, including climbing trees and surfing the roof of their VW, and we had so much fun.

Well their EP has now been released and my photography is all over it. - NATSKY
