"Winner in 2006 ASCAP Songwriter Showcase"

Eddie Becker is named a winner in the ASCAP Songwriter Showcase – original composition contest. The song The Blues Down in the Delta, winner in the Light Pop category, is one of twelve winners out of approximately 500 entries. The Blues Down in the Delta was inspired by the devastation and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The ASCAP awarded, The Blues Down in the Delta, was recorded by the Eddie Becker Band also finalists in the 2005 DC Blues Society blues performance competition.

As winners of the ASCAP Songwriters Showcase members of the Eddie Becker Band will perform an acoustic version of Blues Down in the Delta at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on May 1, 2006. The special guest host of the ASCAP Songwriters Showcase will be Stephen Schwartz, the highly acclaimed composer and lyricist for such successful Broadway shows as Pippin, Godspell, and his newest smash hit, Wicked. This ASCAP event will present talented songwriters from the Mid-Atlantic region – including DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Each songwriter (or their designated singer) will perform a song representing one of the following genres – musical theatre, jazz vocals, cabaret, or light pop.

The performance of Blues Down in the Delta by the Eddie Becker Band invokes the emotions felt by the country and the entire world as the effects of Hurricane Katrina unfolded. The simplistic styling of the song causes listeners to focus on the message delivered by the song. Oz Smith digs deep into his soul and delivers a vocal performance of true emotion. The trumpet solo, performed by Dr. Gil Wilshire, member of the Eddie Becker Band – Beltway Horns, depicts sounds of the New Orleans region while emoting feelings of pain and suffering the people of the region experienced.

Co-sponsors include the Songwriters Association of Washington (SAW), Kennedy Center Performance Plus, DC Cabaret Network, Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) and Washington Area Music Association (WAMA).

Bio

The Eddie Becker Band is a cooperative of musicians who play throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Eddie is a native of Washington D.C. and has had the opportunity to play with some of the metropolitan area’s finest musicians.

Depending on the venue, the Eddie Becker Band line-up will change depending on the size and type of event. The core band is a standard guitar, bass, drums and lead vocalist. The band can also include harmonica, saxophone or feature a dynamic four-piece horn section – “The Beltway Horns”.

Eddie's guitar style incorporates many diverse influences including 60’s soul music, rhythm & blues, Chicago-style blues, rock and boogie. This diverse influence of musical styles has allowed him to work with many different musicians and bands and perform as a session guitarist for Roar Productions recording studios in Columbia, MD during the 90's.

Eddie has been playing in the Washington area since the mid-sixties and played extensively in the Washington D.C. club scene including the Hayloft Lounge, Rocket Room, Bennie's Rebel Room, Rabbit's Foot, 1320 Club, Grog & Tankard, Apple Pie and many other then-famous D.C. night clubs. Today, the Eddie Becker Band plays in the Montgomery County Maryland and Northern Virginia areas along with traveling to local beach resorts.
