"THE EDUCATED GUESS"

Anyone who has truly delved into the indie music scene knows listening can, at times, be more of an act of faith than an enjoyable audio experience. Sometimes, you’re awed by the sheer unknown talent before you, and sometimes, you can’t help but remember mainstream hits fondly.

“Beautiful Strangers” by Educated Guess falls in the former category. I have to admit, I wasn’t completely impressed through the first listen, but as I let the music soak in, I was struck by the subtle grace of this album. The piano, guitar, slight percussion and deep male vocals intertwine into interesting and beautiful melodies, reminiscent of no one, really, but themselves.

It gets better, too. The cherry on this delicious treat of an album is the guitarist is a student at OU. The four band members are all college aged, originating from their hometown, St. Louis. But even though the band is young, their sound is not.

I wouldn’t describe the music as catchy, but it certainly has a flair of its own. My favorite song of the album was “Flight Over Callous,” a more upbeat song with an earnest melody. The talent in this band is obvious. Even though they were unsigned when this record was released, the composition is pleasingly tight and polished, a feat many young indie bands fail to grasp. It’s the kind of music that belongs at a relaxed hole-in-the-wall coffee house — graceful, chill and soothing.

The main issue I have with the album is many of the songs seem to run together. After a long listening stint, the individual songs fail to distinguish themselves from one another as the guitar and piano play on, only slightly varied.

But even unvaried, the connection between the guitar, piano and vocals is worth listening to. The Educated Guess is a debut band, and the potential “Beautiful Strangers” carries is evident throughout every song. The band recently signed with Warner Brothers studios and is planning a 2008 Midwest summer tour. All in all, their future looks bright.

Bio

The Educated Guess was established by four homeless strangers looking to play shows for payment of beer and cigarettes. They transport their equipment using a highly technical system of milkcrates and used recycle bins, and even eat the occasional meal or two. In 2004, the Educated Guess were unable to secure legal copyrights to their prized masterpiece, "Since U Been Gone", before becoming a major radio hit for that dirty thief, Kelly Clarkson.
