The Elements of Style

 Chicago, Illinois, USA
BandRockPop

Guitars drone and chime, drums are frantic energy and bass is intricate yet steady. Vocals swim above it all, crooning and screeching captivating melodies. Fans have observed similar musical qualities to those of bands like “The Walkmen,” “The Smiths,” and “The Smoking Popes.”

Biography

Spinning their 2011 self-titled album, one can easily associate the term "gentlemen" with Chicago's The Elements of Style. Vocalist/guitarist Aaron Koss - in the footsteps of literate, yet troubled romantics like Morrissey or The Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser (and even to a local extent, the Smoking Popes' Josh Caterer) - winds his elongated vowels and book-smart delivery around blissful, jangly indie-pop provided by guitarist Brian Bonenberger and the rhythm section of Chris Bijalba and Jimmy Rhein that is at a constant simmer. These are songs that demand the listener to dream, swoon, take chances or fall in love but they all act as warm invitations rather than authoritative commands. Koss retains the innocence of someone who's still learning about the dichotomy of relationships, but with a voice that calmly reassures himself, and the songs' various protagonists, that he knows more than he's letting on.

But that was last year, and these guys are already eyeing what's next for themselves. Beginning in 2007, The Elements of Style went through several line-up changes and hiatuses before firmly solidifying their current four-piece roster, who are currently at work at a follow-up album, Take Care Always and Have A Night Ahead, which the band describes as a departure from their previous effort. Recording 18 songs for Take Care Always and whittling those down to album-length is a challenging process for a band so obviously bursting with ideas. The Elements of Style have also been trying out some of these tracks live, including the head-bobbing "No One's Ever Going to Notice" and "I Know That I Can Find A Way (To Offend You)," both letting Koss flex his pipes a bit in a higher register, to great response. The band is plotting to have Take Care Always out early next year.

Lyrics

When I Close My Eyes

Written By: Aaron David Koss

When I close my eyes
I can see your face

You're lying in my arms
we've got our own place

And I'm not sick at all
And you're not stressed about school

We're just hanging out

When I close my eyes
I can hear my songs

The ringing in our ears
I watch you sing along

And I'm not shy at all
And you're just cute as can be

And we're just hanging out

These are the things I dream

I just want us to be
as happy as we can be

Don't think it's asking much
All I need is your touch,
Your love, your company
and your smile

When I close my eyes
I can feel your love

I feel it in my heart
it helps me rise above

these are the things I dream

I just want us to be
as happy as we can be

Don't think its asking much
All I need is your touch
Your love, your company
and your smile

Moving On

Written By: Aaron David Koss

So I'm waiting around
for the news to drop

Thinking about the day I'm finally taken from you

And it pains me to think of you moving on

I guess I'm
being selfish
I can't help it

And I know
That you'll wake up one day
and you'll feel different than you did before
and you'll want more

I hope that I can be the one you love eternally

but if i'm not, you will move on

I wish that I could know what happens when you let me go

If it can't be, hope you'll be happy

When I daydream about what our future holds

Sometimes I can see you with another family

And it drives me crazy thinking about that but what scares me most

Is thinking you'd be better off without me

And I know
That you'll wake up one day and you'll feel different than you did before

you'll want more

I hope that I can be the one you love eternally

but if i'm not
you will move on

I wish that I could know what happens when you let me go

if it can't be
hope you'll be happy

i can feel my heart
breaking every time I see
you in someone elses arms in my dreams

i can feel my heart
breaking every time I see
you in someone elses arms in my dreams

i can feel my heart
breaking every time I see
you in someone elses arms in my dreams

i can feel my heart
breaking every time I see
you in someone elses arms
in my dreams
