The Elevators began in Drew D’agostine’s dorm room. He was listening to his favorite album, the Beatles, “Abbey Road.” Alex Schiff heard the music blasting from across the hall and stopped in to listen. The two of them tapped and sang along to the music as if it was their own. Drew then said to Alex, “Lets start a band.” Alex complied and said, “Ok.”
For the next year or so, they spent the majority of the hours of each day writing music and improving themselves as piano players. After having written their 100th song, Alex and Drew decided it was about time to put a band together to play them.
Two problems became apparent. One, they both played piano. Two, they didn’t know of anybody to start a band with other than themselves. So they were stuck with a line-up of two piano players.
One day, Alex remembered that his good friend from high school, Erick Lee, was a fine guitar player, and could sing. He invited Erick to play with him and Drew. Erick said yes.
Now that the band was starting to take shape, Alex decided to move over to bass. Drew was rapidly improving at rhythm guitar, and Erick was clearly much better and didn’t have to do anything other than be patient with Alex and Drew.
They played their first gig with drummer, Dan Katz at an outdoor block party. The band still had no name. In between songs, one fan from the crowd yelled out, “What’s your name?” Alex looked around desperately trying to find something to inspire a name. He saw the “Yamaha” logo on the back of their keyboard, reversed the word, and shouted out, “Ahamay.”
The band knew that “Ahamay” was a terrible name. They would spend hours trying to come up with names. They came up with everything from “The Mongers” to “Grandma’s Medicine Cabinet.”
One day, Drew was watching, “Sesame Street,” when Elmo shrewdly stated that, “life is like an elevator, it goes up and down.” Drew’s eyes lit up, and he said, “That’s it, we are the Elevators.”
After trying out several drummers, Erick remembered that his friend from high school, Mike Pappas was an excellent drummer. So Erick invited him to play with the band. The final lineup was set.
