The Ericksons

The Ericksons

BandFolkAcoustic

Midwestern sisters bring modern folk music to Brooklyn, NY with sounds from tenor and acoustic guitars, banjo and vocals that interweave creating layers of harmony and skilled melodies.

Biography

What is it that compels us to leave home, to leave family, our places of origin; to travel to places unfamiliar? For Bethany Erickson and Jenny Kochsiek it was a dream, a knowledge and an experience of beauty rooted deep in their lives. Something swept them from the Midwest to Brooklyn, NY where they have built a musical life, playing and singing in the venues of New York City as The Ericksons.
Their songwriting began years before moving to New York. Bethany, living in Wisconsin, committed her life to songwriting soon after leaving college. Jenny’s journey led her to New York to become a teacher in the summer of 2005. Despite the distance, destiny brought the two sisters back together, and their paths became intimately intertwined as they discovered musical possibilities within each other. It is through making music together that the pair attempts to live honestly and find beauty even in the darkest of places.

Lyrics

What If

Written By: Bethany Erickson

I've been running around in the dark,
I've been kicking stones
I've been throwing sparks
I've been makin' plans

But nothing ever happens like you think should,
Only how it will or how it would,
and it's got me wondering.

What if you came over and grabbed my hand or wrapped your arms around my shoulder.
What if we could fly a banner way up high in the sky,
what would we tell them,
what would we tell them?

And what if we could say all the things we thought we'd never say,
yeah, what if the sky weren't so lovely on a bright, warm, sunny day.
Yeah what if we could say all the things we thought we'd never say,
yeah, what if the sky weren't so lovely on a bright, warm sunny day.

I will be your teacher show you the way,
I will be your preacher and I'll teach you how to pray,
I will be your lover and friend,
I will be your student and we'll start all over again.

Time has a way of telling the truth,
yes and time has a way of breaking what you thought might always be new.

Northwind

Written By: Bethany Erickson

I will be your next of kin,
I'll fill all the dark places in,
I will take the wrong and I will make it right,
I will drive you home straight on through the night.

I will be your one time love,
yes I will be your life long friend,
I will hold the broken pieces and I will glue them back together again.

I have told you one million times and I guess I will tell you another time or two that this is how the story goes and this is how the north wind blows.

There are words I'd like to say yes and there are times I'd make it all go away.
Oh and there are dreams had in the middle of the night,
when I close my eyes I can see the light.

So come now softly don't be scared,
you will soon find out how much I can bear.
I will hold the broken pieces,
oh I will hold the broken pieces,
yes I will hold the broken pieces and I will glue them back together again.
