"Like some sort of electro-folk"

Biography

The Estate are a Sydney based duo, consisting of Braden Clarke (keys, vocals, programming) and Brendan Gibson (guitars, vocals, programming).

The pair met at high school, where they would meet at night to jam in the empty schoolyard.

The first track The Estate recorded (Out of Town) was immediately picked up by Foghorn records for release on the Grow Your Own: Upload 2 compilation, released in 2008. The Grow Your Own series has previously featured artists such as Sick Puppies and The Panics.

The Estate self-recorded their debut album masterplan (MGM) which, although not a major commercial success, had critics taking notice. Elise Rana of TNT Magazine (London) called the album ‘a delicious slice of guitar driven electro-pop’.

The Estate released a covers EP, Impostors, on iTunes in February 2009. The track list featured covers of songs by Madonna, Neil Young, Paul Simon and Shawn Colvin, and received significant airplay on Sydney’s FBI radio.

Before beginning work on their next EP, The Estate consulted with Matt O’Connor (Thirsty Merc, The Beautiful Girls, Mia Dyson), who saw the duo’s potential and steered them towards a more accessible sound.

The resultant yet-to-be-named album takes the New Wave sound of The Estate to the next level, mixed by Sean Carey (Thirsty Merc) and polished up by mastering guru Kathy Naunton (Dissociatives, Missy Higgins). "Questions" is currently in post production, due for release early 2011.

Answers

Written By: Braden Clarke

I usually get the answers when the questions come
Adding one to one ain't always a simple sum
I used to get the answers, now they come too slow
I once had a grip on things, but I let go

This feeling it's internal, and it won't get out
My straight lines are circles - that's why I'm not there by now
This feeling's got me tangled like I'm up in blue
Overcome but what I've got myself into

[chorus:]
It's gonna take time to get this thing right
We gotta learn to fight
If we're gonna get by
Swimming upstream is harder than it seems
If you take the lead
That could be what we need
And that'd be just fine with me

You say that we're similar, but that's not true
I got tunnel vision and you can't see what's in front of you
You struggle to listen, I try not to shout
Wishing you had some idea of what I'm talking about

CHORUS

I usually get the answers when the questions come
Adding one to one ain't always a simple sum
Used to get the answers, now they come too slow
I once had a grip, but I let go

Know You Can't

Written By: Brendan Gibson

When will you see me ‘cos it’s been way too long
And I want you back to tease me, though I know it’s wrong
Come home I want to see your face upon my pillow
But I know you can’t and it breaks my heart

It seems an easy thing when you’re not around
These past few months my head’s been firmly in the ground
Come home I want to feel your touch upon my face
But I know you can’t and it breaks my heart
And it seems hard to explain
But I’ve towed your line such a long, long time
Just waiting for a change

The company you keep brings light upon my day
I’ve built no tolerance and I cannot find a way
And I need to hear you speak those words you long to say
But I know you can’t and it breaks my heart
And it seems hard to explain
But I’ve towed your line such a long, long time
Just waiting for a change

[Bridge]
We could save us from each other
And that would be a good excuse
You’ve got such a shallow lover
So how could you refuse me?
I don’t know

I cannot wait for you to see things in this light
I have to face the fact this one was meant to die
But it would be so sweet, if only for one night
But I know you can’t and it breaks my heart
And it seems hard to explain
But I’ve towed your line such a long, long time
And now I walk away

Under the Weather

Written By: Braden Clarke

I'm told that I gotta stop wanting what is not mine
Can you help me with that ?
But if we settle, I'm sure regret'll come
So don't hold back
And don't look back

[chorus:]
I know we been under the weather
We gotta keep it together
I'm defending my dependence, it's a neccessary thing
I don't know just quite what I mean
But you'd better agree

I had a meeting with the man, he said to re-write the masterplan
I can't afford to be late
If you don't function, then you're just an obstruction
Get out of my way
Get out of my way

CHORUS

Blow the City to Rubble

Written By: Padraic Gibson, Brendan Gibson

You blow the city to rubble
And huddled in the shadows
Hunger drives a woman into the street
Who will she meet there?
Your tanks are blocking food, choking life
Who will she meet there?
The bullet of a sniper drives inside her

[chorus]
There's confusion in the air because of you
You make believe and then you say it's true
But your shit won't fly forever
And we'll see when this is over
How much pain and tragedy is because of you
Because of you

And here in Sydney
The other side of the world
Filter stories, filter stories
The media barons protect the government and their gun
You know it's true
But still the stories seep on through
It's banging on my inside what to do
You've got thousands killed in vain in just a few days

Stay with me

Written By: Braden Clarke

You must have such a low opinion of me
If only I could make you see
That you are the air I breathe
I don't know where this is going to
But I don't think you like me like I like you

You make me feel like a vending machine
You push my buttons and emotions run out of me
You know you know just how to work it so good
Stay with me, oh how I wish you would
You gotta stay with me

Coffee on Tuesday, I thought I was on time
Must be too late, or too high - you've left me behind
It's harder to learn what you don't wanna know
And love's never equal, that's just the way it goes

You make it sound like there's no chance for us
Must have missed something, thought that I had earned your trust
Sorry if I am such a drain on your time
Stay with me without a reason why
You gotta stay with me

[bridge:]
This could be a game
But I know how you play
I don't mind - either way
The only thing that matters now
You gotta stay

You got the look of a girl with a gun
Who knows how much power she holds over someone
So take the shot if that's what you're gonna do
Stay with me - I'm begging you
You gotta stay with me
